My love and biochemistry started when I was young after seeing people; especially my childhood friends, who suffered from chronic illnesses such as sickle cell anemia. Ever since, I have been determined to come up with a way to alleviate people's suffering by providing the necessary medication that is essential in reducing pain, suffering, morbidity, and mortality. The concept of pain and suffering has always intrigued me; hence I have always been keen on exploring the mechanisms in which humans experience pain and how medications such as painkillers are developed to suppress and alter these pathways. This is one of the primary reasons that has made me want to attain a degree in biochemistry to study and have knowledge of the complex chemical processes in the human body.
I am a 17-year-old female born and raised in Venezuela. My mother and I had to move to Miami, Florida, from Venezuela in the year 2015 when I was just 12 years old. My father lives in Trinidad and Tobago, where he was born. I come from a small family where I'm the only child. In my early school years, I attended the Doral Academy Preparatory Charter School. Since my first day in school, I have always worked hard, and in return, I have been able to shine and perform extraordinarily well, and I have been in the honored roll of my school for the past three years.
My good grades can witness my hard work since my unweighted GPA is 3.638, while the weighted GPA is 4.468. Throughout my studies, I have demonstrated clearly that I have natural instincts for sciences and related disciplines. The science subjects taught in school have enhanced my knowledge of the field of biochemistry hence intensifying my interest in becoming a biochemist. During my learning, I have always enjoyed entropy topics and chemical equilibria. I have been fascinated by the depth and also the complexity of organic chemistry. I am mostly interested in how organic molecules' structures interact and relate to chemical reactions and how this concept can be used successfully in the pharmaceutical industry to develop drugs for various diseases. The biological topics related to the human body and the functions of various body processes have had a special place in my heart. I have a keen interest in comprehending all the body processes and their functions both in their cellular and molecular level to become a successful biochemist who can evaluate the genetics and immune systems to come up with safe and effective medications.
I currently do not have any work experience in this field; however, I am willing to learn and practice to gain the needed knowledge and skills. To demonstrate my commitment and hard work, I can comfortably state that I have completed 125 hours of community service at the three largest Recreational parks in Miami. This shows how much I am willing to go to achieve my dreams. Some of the jobs that I did included mulching around the trees, painting, cleaning playground equipment, and raking sand. This was driven by my desire to prove that I can be of importance to my community. Also, I was determined to help in beautification and clean-up of the parks, which is the responsibility of all responsible patriots to preserve the environment. I know the environment since proper environmental conservation reduces illnesses since there is no pollution; therefore, no climate changes contribute to disease processes. My hobbies include; drawing, cooking, baking, gardening, biking, sketching, painting, reading, and writing books. My education/career goal is to attain a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry to become a scientist to help in the process of vaccine development. Additionally, this educational milestone will help me gain the knowledge and skills needed to help patients with chronic illnesses.
