Introduction
Nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners and leadership is ever-expanding to match the complex health care sector. The exponential growth in the industry is coupled with costs, caring continuity, safety, innovation, outcomes, and sustainable development. Thus, the NPD standards and scope of practice emphasize the roles of the practitioners in managing change, achieving the set outcome, and supporting the collaboration within and without the profession. NPD leaders must, therefore, display features of project management and show the characteristics of the leaders of change within the organization, system levels, and to achieve career development, particularly in areas such as promotions (Sahay & Riley, 2003). In this review, I will focus on my strengths as depicted on the Gallup result and link them with NPD standards in an attempt to rise in the nursing career, leadership skills, and learning.
Based on my gallop results, I am an achiever, consistent, believer, futuristic, committed to the course, hardworking, and focused. These are personal values that can get anyone to the highest career levels and also depicts leadership traits. However, most of the nurses are finding it hard to get promotions to a higher level. For example, in my case, I have been working on the Department of Veteran Affairs for the last ten years as a Home-Based Primary Care RN. Driven by the need to get a raise, I have been studying but I am yet to get the Nurse II. Thus, I need to integrate my competencies with the areas the NPD focuses on.
As an NPD practitioner, I should be able to promote role development by recognizing and creating strategies whose goal is to facilitate a gradual process of maturation through lifelong learning (Sahay & Riley, 2003). To achieve this, my attributes, such as consistency, commitment, and hard work, will be of great assistance. Being hardworking and committed to the course, handling responsibilities in the circles on the cogs outside, signifies that I can engage in any of the duties as they guide me towards achieving my desired results.
The output I am focused on is education. Besides getting my BSN, I am also working on my MSN. Additionally, I am looking forward to changes, particularly in my professional role, competence, and growth. These coupled with the attributes such consistency and results-oriented contributes to optimal nursing care and health, which ultimately impact positively on the protection of the public.
By the use of the American Nursing Association (ANA) guidelines, the NPD principles can be divided into the principles of practice and professional performance (Marion et al., 2016). In my pursuit of education, I need to focus on gaps, including issues, supporting data, and trends to determine the need for individuals and society in general. Additionally, through the use of data and available literature, I should decide whether or not I should focus on the knowledge gap, skill, or practice gap (Smith et al., 2016). I should also to maintain the current knowledge and competency by the use of evidence-based practice (EBP) and research which are essential in both the NPD practice and nursing. To further my goals, I should contribute positively to the scientific inquiry, participate in building knowledge, and integrate the best available studies into practice.
I should also focus on resource utilization, effectiveness, especially in costs related to professional growth activities and outcomes, while considering factors such as safety and quality of service delivery. Additionally, I must collaborate with various interprofessional teams, leaders, and other stakeholders to refine my leadership skills, nursing practice, and positive results (Smith et al., 2016). Regular evaluation by external bodies is necessary, so I may gauge my progress using a different professional perspective (Harper & Maloney, 2016). Lastly, through aspects such as mentorship and contribution to and from the professional bodies, I will refine my skillset, and make me a best-suited candidate for the promotion.
Conclusion
In conclusion, based on the changes being experienced globally in all the professions, including an influx on the number of educated and experienced professionals available, it is tough to get through the career levels. Advancing education is a good start since it improves an individual's professionalism and career standing. But at the same time, it must be guided by the gaps available in the market, and ANA offers a basic guideline on how to commence and pursue the same. Additionally, an individual needs to have noticeable personal attributes and try as much as possible to match them with NPD practitioner's standards as well as the project management provisions to achieve career development and requisite leadership.
