Abstract

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a tool used for screening purposes with an aim of making quality movements quantifiable. There are several investigations regarding the predicting nature of the tool in terms of identifying the possibility of injuries occurring before they happen in the military and athletic settings. However, the validity of this concept is under question considering that studies have not been concrete in predicting the phenomenon when using intercollegiate players of football. In that case, the purpose of this research was to examine whether the Body Mass Index (BMI), the FMS, and the bilateral body mass symmetry measure can be implemented in the prediction of injuries for the players throughout the season. There were 81 participants that were selected for test using the protocols of the FMS. Using a scale of 0 to 3, there were seven tests that the athletes undertook, where the possibility of a composite score was at 21. The athletes were characterized as either having a positive or negative test depending on the cutoff of 14 and 15. The calculation of the BMI was based on the weight and height of the athletes. The categorization of the participants based on injuries was dependent on the data acquired from the National Collegiate Athletes Association (NCAA), and the Injury Surveillance System (ISS). The reports as indicated by the raters pointed out at one being injured or not. The results indicated that the athletes had an average composite score of 15.4. This was an implication that the FMS tool is reliable when used in a college football setting in the prediction of injuries.

Introduction

Sports are activities that are many people take part in as there are various reasons as to why people do them. For a first, they have become an integral part of one's income, as there are many people who have made fortunes from sporting activities. Secondly, they provide a platform for entertainment, where millions of people rely on the same for entertaining themselves. Thirdly, sporting is a way of staying healthy and fit, especially for those who take part in the same for leisure. That being said, sporting activities have one major issue, and that is the occurrence of injuries. The injuries differ depending on the sporting activity that one take part in, and the aggressiveness with which one participates in the same. In that case, when looking at football, this is one of the most common sports where injuries are very prevalent. In fact, it is the sport that people spend more time playing per day when compared to any other sport, thereby making the participants be two more times likely to get an injury of any kind, with 5.1 injuries happening per every 10000 hours of playing.

Most of the injuries that take place in the sport often happen when people are practicing and when they are doing the same in a competitively. The Hungarian National Institute for Sports Medicine (HNISM) that is responsible for providing medical services to the national teams attributes to the fact that there are many athletes who have died from diseases related to the heart, in addition to those who get long term injuries, including those who do the same for recreational purposes. The major concern from the institute however is the fact that many active Hungarians are getting severe injuries to the extent that they are being forced to withdraw totally from sports. The prevention of injuries among athletes is one of the most difficult tasks, and only a few countries in the world have the ability to do so in a comfortable manner. the use of the Functional Movement Screening (FMS) would go a long way into helping the situation considering that it incorporates the use of various fitness techniques that would help in determining whether one would get an injury or not. Understanding the use of the FMS would be easier when looking at how it is used in the US with regards to college students and professionals who take part in the sport.

This is a topic of interest considering that while many people continue getting injured, many more are still putting themselves at risk even when they know that there are no structured ways that would be helpful in the prevention of the same. It is essential to note that not all injuries can be prevented, as there are those that are inevitable, like having a broken limb after collision with another person.

Problem Statement

From that, it is clear that there is a need to tender for athletes considering that they are always at risk of being injured. There is a need for finding ways that would prevent them from getting injured in a regular manner, so that most of them can have a chance to participate in the same for a long time.

Statement of Purpose

This research will mainly dwell on establishing the use of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) in ensuring that it would be easy to predict the occurrence of injuries among athletes before they happen. This would be useful in that measures would be set with an aim of preventing the same earlier, and the athlete would be safe from the same.

Overview of the Methodology

Since the research available in Hungary in relation to FMS is premature, most of the same would be from the studies that have been conducted internationally, including in the United States and a few other countries within Europe. In that case, the investigation will focus on doing document analysis with an aim of finding case studies of successful analyses that have done elsewhere. It will also involve viewing of more research cases that have been conducted in Hungary while comparing the same to international investigations.

Objectives

  • To assess the rate at which injuries occur while at the same time finding out the average time that the injured take to recover.
  • To establish that the use of the Functional Movement Screen as an injury management technique is valid and necessary for athletes
  • To evaluate the FMS technique while finding out the areas where more can be done, considering that it is flexible to interventions.
  • To assess the way the FMS is implemented in the United States and compare the same with how it is used and how it can be used further in Hungary.

Research Questions

How effective is the Functional Movement Screening when dealing with predicting the occurrence of injuries among athletes from various sporting activities?

Can the technique be used by athletes from all age groups and participants of all sporting activities?

Theoretical Background

The Functional Movement Screening technique is one that has been used in a few countries with an aim of reducing the rate at which injuries occur among athletes. Statistics from various sporting and medical agencies indicate that there is an increase in the number of athletes that get injuries that are very long-term to the extent that they are unable to get back into the activities that they were doing initially. For the sake of better understanding the implementation of the FMS, the best analytical case would be that of college students who take part in college football. The reason for selecting the sport is based on the fact that it is highly associated with the occurrence of many injuries, including when the participants are playing the same competitively, or even when they are practicing. The nature of the sport is such that injuries can occur to anyone irrespective of the season that one is playing.

Injury Definition

In that case, it is essential to understand the definition of an injury, considering that there is no one acceptable definition of the same in the world. According to the National Collegiate Athlete Association (NCAA) and the Injury Surveillance System (ISS) an injury is needs to have a fulfillment of certain conditions before it can be regarded as an injury. First and foremost, the injury needs to have occurred at a time when the player was actively taking part in a competitive match or during practice. Secondly, the injury warranted the attention of a physician immediately after it occurred. Thirdly, the injury was such that it has restricted the athlete from performing or taking part in any sporting activity after its happening. In another context, injuries are deemed as so if there is visibility that there is a damage of tissues, if there is a swelling, or if there is laxity of the muscles. The inability of the player to get back into practice within a day is also a consideration when thinking about an injury. Further analysis of the issue may incorporate the concept of time loss, where an injury is regarded as so if the athlete loses play or practice time.

To get the rates at which injuries occur, a group of athletes get exposed to a situation where they are more likely to get an injury. This is made possible by exposing the athletes in a game of practice where natural conditions leading to injuries are set. However, there are arguments against the process considering that it does not take into account that some athletes may be absent or they may spend less time playing. The method is not reliable for collecting data based on the fact that it requires the researcher to use many resources while putting in a lot of effort. In some cases, injuries have been put into some categories, including those that are major, moderate, and minor. The name depends on the nu...
