Question 1
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative (RWJF) on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine research (IOM) had a goal of transforming the health care system through dealing with many issues in the American health care system. RWJF and IOM were driven by the fact that nurses are at the forefront of patient care. They perform a significant responsibility in trying to ensure the system meets the goals that were set by the Affordable Care Act of 2010.
To create an overhaul of the healthcare system, RWJF and IOM instigated a 2-year plan. This plan had the aim of assessing and transforming the nursing profession. Generally, the nursing sector is among the most significant areas of the healthcare workforce (Joint Commission, 2010). After the assessment, a report was compiled by RWJF and IOM that recommended for an action-oriented blueprint related to nursing. There were four major things recommended by the committee. The first recommendation was that nurses should carry out the responsibilities aligned with their learning and training fully. The second recommendation was that nurses should get increased learning and training. This is possible by having an education system that is improved. Such a system offers flawless academic progression. The third recommendation related to making nurses full partners with other healthcare personnel, such as physicians, especially when it comes to redesigning health care in the country. The final recommendation was having an effective workforce policy and planning, which can be created by having improved information infrastructure and data collection.
Question 2
The IOM "Future of Nursing" report is critical because it intends to transform the entire health care system positively. When it comes to nursing practice, the report called for allowing nurses to practice to their full potential. This idea is important because nurses can change the health care system with their enormous potential, which can lead to innovative strategies (Joint Commission, 2010). For nurses to successfully practice, the past policies and regulations that limit the ability of nurses to produce a widespread transformation should all be removed. Also, cultural barriers and regulations limiting the scope of practice should be done away with, especially for advanced practice registered nurses.
When it comes to nursing education, the report states that changes in the healthcare system, as well as the practice environment, will be attained through changing the education system of nurses. This should be done before and after the nurses get their license. A good education is vital for the future and the current generation of nurses since it will enable them to provide patient-centered, quality, and safe services across all settings.
Finally, the report gives strategies for creating nursing workforce development. This is possible through effective policymaking and planning. "Planning for fundamental, wide-ranging changes in the preparation and deployment of the nursing workforce will require comprehensive data on the numbers and types of professionals currently available and required to meet future needs" (Gillespie et al., 2017, p. 174). The priority for the National Health Workforce Commission should fill the gap relating to available workforce data. A developed workforce will provide quality services to patients.
Question 3
The state-based action coalitions are after creating and maintaining a high quality health care. The action coalitions are headed by nurses and business partners, and they create change locally by working to transform healthcare through nursing positively. Currently, the populating is increasing very fast. This has also increased the number of the sick and elderly population. Therefore, state-based action coalition also tries to cater to this increasing demand by utilizing all experience, knowledge, talent, and skills of nurses. Focusing attention on nurses will help to commit nurses to offering improved healthcare services to the public. State-based action coalition advances the goals for the future of nursing by collaborating with various partners or stakeholders to put into practice the proposal of the report provided by the IOM. This has brought about some positive changes in the nursing services. Stakeholders in various states are also collaborating effectively, thereby advancing the healthcare services due to equal participation.
Question 4
There are some initiatives spearheaded by New Jersey's action coalition. The first initiative is fostering interpersonal collaboration in healthcare. This initiative advances the nursing profession through increased collaboration. The collaboration between nurses and other healthcare providers improves the quality of care and patient outcomes. The good thing about collaboration is that it is among the trademarks of many highly successful healthcare innovations (New Jersey Action Coalition, n.d.). Additionally, the initiative also advances the nursing profession through increased communication and collaboration between healthcare personnel, and this eventually improves the safety and quality of patient care. The technique of interprofessional approach enables individual and the experience of team members and collective skills to operate together to provide higher level services.
The second initiative is nurses working with other partners to ensure kids are kept safe, especially while riding their bicycles. The West New York Health Department (WNYHD) works with other bodies every year to carry out Safe Kids Day. This is a community event that trains children in the area about safety and fun coinciding. Much focus of the initiative is on bike and helmet safety. The initiative advances the nursing profession by keeping children safe from injuries (New Jersey Action Coalition, n.d.). It helps to reduce the number of preventable injuries that have now become the number one killer of children in the area. The number of head injuries will be reduced by encouraging children to use helmets.
In New Jersey, there are two significant barriers to advancement. The first barrier is the presence of old policies and regulations. These policies and regulations hinder the scope of practice for nurses. The healthcare facilities are slow in aligning with the progression in the industry. This is because of the scope of practice regulations and policies that slow down the changes. The policymakers in New Jersey can deal with this problem through changing the state scope of practice laws in line with the Administrative Rules and National Council of State Boards of Nursing's (NCSBN'S) Model Nursing Practice Act.
The second barrier to advancement is the inadequate education for nursing staff. The number of nurses with a baccalaureate degree in still low. As a result of this, the expertise and professional practices of nurses in the area is negatively affected. This barrier can be solved through partnering with dedicated and generous philanthropy committee to help in creating an initiative that supports the advancement of education for nursing staff. The number of nurses with the required expertise in the area will be increased through this method.
