Introduction
The introduction of home nursing to senior citizens has been helpful in improving the quality of life to the affected persons. However, this practice has been faced by many challenges that have hindered how this service is provided. The paper purposes to summarize the nursing home, provide a summary of the coordination issues between hospice and assisted living, and describe how government regulation makes quality data available to the consumer.
According to Span, nursing homes have always been considered a place where senior citizens are always being abandoned. That is the reason as to why the author is quoted saying "Promise me you'll never put me in a nursing home (Span)." However, this reason should not be the case. Nursing homes employ highly qualified individuals who try to offer quality services to their clients. It reaches a point in life where parents or senior citizens become a burden to the young generation. These people always require a lot of care that people might be in a position to offer or recognize (Span). That is the reason as to why nursing homes come into play. Nursing homes will always make sure they take care of their clients by bathing them, feeding them, taking them out to interact with their fellows, and also look after health and welfare. Therefore, the article has encouraged individuals to have a positive attitude toward nursing homes or assisted living than just thinking that it is a place where senior citizens are being dumped. Moreover, as the author has stated it will reach a point in life where a person will be taken to nursing homes.
According to Graham, problems do arise when the services of hospice are brought into nursing homes. Communication is one of the coordination issues that occur. The reason is that there is poor communication between paid caregivers, nursing homes staffs, hospice staff, and families (Graham). The author has indicated that poor communication that exists in this collaboration leads to potential conflicts. However, the author has provided some few suggestions that would solve the communication issues and better coordination between assisted living facilities and hospice (Graham). First, all the stakeholders should educate themselves on the importance of collaboration between the assisted living facilities and hospice. This action will involve why they prefer a particular hospice and the services they provide. Secondly, all the stakeholders should be clear about their expectations (Graham). This action will make them create goals that they would strive to achieve in future hence improving communication and coordination. Besides, all the stakeholders should know everyone involved in this collaboration. This action will reduce cases of people not acknowledging their roles. Lastly, the author has indicated that the stakeholders should have a plan.
According to Thomas, the federal government has introduced the Star rating system to enhance quality standards in light of criticism that these ratings are being artificially inflated and they are inaccurate (Thomas). The government through its officials indicated that they hoped that these alterations would make it easier for clients to differentiate between various facilities and also force the nursing homes to make improvements. The rating system proposed by the government will operate as follows: facilities will be graded depending on the information and data collected from the clients, the patients will be given opportunities to provide feedback regarding the services of a particular nursing home, and the facilities will be graded depending on the qualifications of their staffs (Thomas).
