Introduction
Frail people, especially adults, are at risk for adverse outcome and are the essential consumers of health care services in the community and acute setting. Both families and formal system are engaged in caring for frail elders because they need special care. However, based on Patricia E.Benner, "From Novice to Expert" theory, this essay plan to address challenges that faces nurses in offering services on frail nursing care in-home care.
Dr. Patricia Benner has shown how expert nurses develop their understanding and skills of the patients care through a multitude of experience and education base. According to Bennie, nursing experiences can be categorized into novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert (DeCoux, 2016, p.205). In novice, the beginner lack experience since he/she is taught general rules to assist in performing the task. These rules can be applied universally, context-free, and independent of particular cases (Flott, and Linden, 2016, p.510). The advanced beginner can show acceptable performance through the experience acquired from various situations. The competent nurse must have 2-3 years in the nursing job and obtains perspectives for planning based on abstract, conscious, and analytical thinking (Bastable, 2017). The proficient understands and perceives scenarios as a whole part, and has a holistic understanding which boosts decision making (Moorman, 2015, p.750). Finally, the expert does not rely on guidelines, rules, or principles to connect the situation, and the performance is more flexible, fluid, and highly-proficient.
Application of Patricia Benner in My Planning Practice
In attaining effective frail nursing care, I am planning to address the issues arising from quality in the nursing education system. Multiple studies have indicated that health care reforms have affected the environment where nursing professionals practice (Cahalan, 2016). For example, the emergence of current health care challenges has changed the nursing services primarily for the frail elders who need care even at home. Hence, according to Benner's model, health professionals should ensure they recruit competent, proficiency as well as an expert who know how to offer quality medical services.
Besides, I am planning to use the knowledge of Patricia E. Benner theory to handle the problems related to nursing professional regulation. For instance, most hospitals and patients are facing challenges due to poor health services offered by medical employees (Campbell-Reed, 2016, p.40). These range from lack of accountability, competence, advanced practice, supervision, and autonomy. The health workers need frequent training on how to handle some situations related to patient such as frail elders who needs special care (Moorman, 2015). Basing on Benner theory, I will plan on how professional associations can boost regulatory activities in health care. These can be nursing accreditation, licensure, professional development through learning and training to raise the quality of care given to frail patients (Williams, 2017).
Accordingly, I am planning to engage all medical institutions to embrace technology to improve education related to medicine. The congestion of learners in clinical sites needs innovative ways to meet the growing numbers (Machin, Hindmarch, Murray, and Richardson, 2016). As the population of medical students raises, the institutions should also increase as well as nurse administrators and educators (Humphrey, 2017). Various studies have noted that the innovative approaches for learning and teaching medical professions have been lacking in many clinical sites, college and universities (Linda, 2014.). This issue affects the services offered to frail nursing care in their households because of the lack of competencies. Thus, basing on Benner theory, every medical institution should emulate technology to facilitate effective and efficient medical training to nurture expert nurses.
Conclusion
Patricia Benner approach "From Novice to Expert" explains how nurses develop their understanding and skills of patient care by combining personal experiences and education foundation. The theory also states that the development of knowledge in nursing needs research via clinical expertise. Based on this approach, my plan focuses on how to address challenges that face nursing in achieving their knowledge, competence, and proficiency in nursing, especially offering quality services to the frail patients in their home.
