Introduction
Education is one of the most essential investment one can ever make. It is a crucial driver towards the success of an individual, country or a community regardless of whether it is achieved through traditional or home mode of schooling. Traditional schooling has been in existence for several decades now, this is a mode of education where learners pursue their education in a classroom setting such as schools, colleges, universities among others, and it is a mode of education where learners are also taught according to a particular program. In most nations, it has remained to be the standard mode of learning. Homeschooling is a type of education where learners study by themselves under the control of their parents/guardians. Even though traditional schools are highly populated, the number of learners opting to homeschool is growing, the main objective of conventional and homeschooling is education to all, but the two methods of schooling use different approaches of learning. Recently a debate has been raging on whether traditional schooling is better than homeschooling, this essay seeks to compare and contrast on whether conventional education is better than homeschooling.
Importance of Traditional Schooling
As mentioned, in the thesis statement, both traditional schooling and homeschooling have one common goal but differ in various ways such as mode of teaching, time flexibility, schedule etc. Traditional schooling is better than homeschooling in the following methods. Firstly, it offers learners with the opportunity to interact with fellow students and their tutors; such socialization helps the student to create friendships and provides an opportunity of establishing professional connections in future (Lee, 2019). Traditional schooling offers learners with better communication channels; this is because students are at liberty of getting help from several sources. In this, I mean a student can get prompt responses to various questions that are either educational or non-educational. It also promotes social development; this is because learners can learn and understand how to cope with different types of students and the environment.
In traditional schooling, students acquire knowledge from qualified teachers who are experts in their area of study. Traditional schooling is better than homeschooling because it offers parents an opportunity to engage in other activities. This is essential because parents have got the responsibility of providing shelter, clothes and food for their families. Traditional schooling provides learners with a wide variety of extra-curriculum activities; this is in need critical in the growth of the learner (Richmond, 2018). Learners have a wide range of curriculum to choose from. It is also believed that traditional schooling is holistic because it offers a learner with the opportunity of knowledge while developing and building interpersonal skills. In conventional education, learners are acquainted and taught all subjects in the school, beginning with familiar subjects and essential themes.
Importance of Homeschooling
On the contrary, the growth of homeschooling is emerging as an alternative to traditional schooling due to its various advantages. Most parents argue that homeschooling is more flexible as opposed to conventional schooling. It also offers a student-focused model of learning, which results in high scores in various tests. As mentioned, homeschooling is a type of education, where students acquire learning without necessarily going to school. Homeschooling is better than traditional schooling because both the parent and the learner can customize the curriculum to suit the learner's interests, due to this it enhances and promotes academic performance due to individualized mode of learning (Heuer & Donovan, 2017). It gives the learner access to a high-quality education that helps the students to improve on various standardized examinations.
It offers learners with greater freedom, this is because learners are not constrained or restricted by things such as time table or other program, and this therefore helps the learner to choose from a wide variety of interests. Homeschooling enables learners to develop strong bonds and relationship with their family members; this is because students spend most of their time with their parents and families. Homeschooling is better than traditional schooling because, here learners are not exposed to bullying, shooting, and use of vulgar words as always reported cases in conventional schooling; hence students are subjected to high levels of discipline and self-organization (Watson, 2018). Homeschooling is cost-effective compared to traditional education, this because, parents are students are not subjected to unnecessary fee hikes, expensive learning materials, tuition fees, school uniforms, transport, and lunch expenses among others.
Conclusion
Both traditional schooling and homeschooling are essential modes of education. This is because they are all geared at providing training to the learners. Both educational approaches are advantageous and disadvantageous in their setting. For instance, even though traditional schooling is affordable in most of the nations, those who choose to homeschool find it more independent because they are not subjected to any tax or cost. It all depends on their choices. Even though homeschooling is better, it calls for a lot of handwork, persistence and dedication to raise students. In traditional schooling, teachers are constrained by the set programs meaning that they must teach that is designed to be taught in a given set of curriculum. Based on the arguments presented, both traditional schooling and homeschooling are essential. Administrators must work on the demerits to improve the mode of education and provide a conducive environment for learners. All that matters is not where one gets an education but how one wants to be educated.
