This journal explains my life development since the earliest I can recall and how I was brought up in Texas and how the environment I grew up shaped me to become the person I am today. The earliest I can recall was at the age of four years living with my parents and grandparents, I am the firstborn in our family, and my cousin used to visit once in a while over the weekends. My little brother was born when I was six years old. At a young age, I spent most of my time with my grandmother and was under her care until I joined the pre-primary school. The apartment we lived in was my parent's property, where they moved in with my grandparents, but that was before I was born.
I was brought up in the same neighborhood since childhood until I joined college; my grandfather had a jewelry store while both parents were corporate workers. The only time we spent as a family was on weekends, mostly on Sundays and probably some evenings on Saturdays. My grandmother's time meant a lot. I can say she taught me good morals that led to me winning the most disciplined student four times in my primary education and elected child leader in my lower and upper secondary education.
Our family grew more prominent when my brother was born and became an added responsibility to me when he was around three years of age and could talk, walk, and play. There was a playground in the neighborhood where children would meet and play, some accompanied by their parents, but most of them came independently (Tyler, 2020, Lally, 2020). At first, some would be scared of trying some of the play items like trampolines but eventually would gain the courage from peer pressure. Unlike my brother, who had to rely on me on everything, even defending him from the bullies in schools and playgrounds, I always had to figure out things my way and maybe seek advice from my parents and grandparents when I got home.
I never liked going to school at a young age but got forced every day until I got used to it; my grandmother encouraged me and always promised to gift me with chocolates every weekend. On my lower level, my dad was impressed by my improved performance and gifted me with a razor scooter. It was my favorite toy in my whole childhood (Nseif, 2020). During my primary school and lower secondary, I had to take care of my little brother and even made sure he boarded the school bus, especially when I had to go back. This activity contributed a lot on enhancing my leadership and problem-solving abilities since I was young.
When I joined upper secondary school, I was active in sports and received an appointment as the games captain. My responsibility was to assist the games master in coordinating all the school games and got the chance to interact with other school students more often as a leader. Through this, I learned to appreciate how other schools did things differently and borrow a few aspects.
At my upper primary, computer games become popular, and a station set up in our estate finally happened. Children would flock into the place after school and over the weekends with money as one had to pay $4 to play two games. I would borrow money from my grandmother every day at least to enjoy one or two games every day, I never concentrated on doing my homework, and this led to poor performance in school. My grandmother was a victim of a car accident and passed away after being in the intensive care unit for around one and a half months. This incident deeply affected my education, for she was my closest family friend; it took close to one year before I could accept the loss and move on. The kind of person we become is influenced by the kind of environment we grow in, including socioeconomic status, culture, learning, and reinforcement. People from better-earning families tend to have self-confidence and secure better jobs, and the opposite is true for those from low-income families. Children who grew up under little tender parental care end up growing to self-depended persons in the future. Human development is a gradual process that is shaped by many factors.
