What types of lessons/activities are taking place? In what ways do the students interact with each other, and with the teachers present? What kinds of instructional strategies does the teacher use? Be specific and give examples.
From the video presented, there is a teacher and group of students seated in a class obtaining information and instructions from the teacher. As depicted in the video, the students are open and interactive among themselves from the fact that the quality is not dead silent. The students are as well given a chance by the teacher to air their views on the duration it takes to go around the planets. The type of instructional strategy that the teacher uses is organizational as it is a requirement from the institution; this is evident as the teacher allocates tasks for each individual, not as a group. The teacher tells the students that they should create a slide of their experience traveling the planet in 12 days. The students are instructed by the teacher to have the assignments of their journey to all the planets but not in a static order, and thus, the students should account on everything they did in each world. After giving the instructions, the teacher gives directions that the students need to work in groups and hence instructs those seated alone to look for a table and fix themselves in one otherwise the rest should work with the people around their tables
How does this classroom arrangement contribute to or detract from the learning environment? What are things beyond the teacher's control?
The class arrangement has a significant impact on the success of any learning process. Humans are social beings, and therefore, they will tend to flock together if they have a common attribute. Studies show that free seating shows the personality of an individual and thus portray the nature of the student. The diligent students will find themselves sitting on the front rows. This ensures that the students grasp all the concepts. The more casual students will not mind the sitting position, but in most cases, they find themselves at the back. Other students opt to have their areas around the doors or windows to attract more activities hence reducing the monotony of concentration in class. It is clear that seating positions influence the success of a course, and thus, the teacher should understand what works best for him or her. Some students will do well with the freedom to choose their sitting positions while the random allotment of sitting areas will uplift others. There are some of the things that are beyond the teacher, and one of them is dealing with the student's life at home. In the video, the students are murmuring, and there are movements around the class. The teacher has all the authority to ask the students to be organized and reduce changes.
Describe how time is being used in the class. How much of the time is used for actual teaching and learning activities, and how much for administrative or logistical activities (such as passing out papers, lining up, etc.)? Is time utilized efficiently? Is there a loss of instructional time because of classroom management issues? Give examples.
It is apparent in the video that the teacher uses almost the entirety of his teaching time to give instructions on what needs to be done for the assignments. There is reduced interaction between the teacher and the students because there is many instructions to deliver within a limited period. The teacher intermixes the learning and giving of instructions or else assignments. The better part of the time the teacher uses in class is to provide directives and directions on what the job should entail. From my point of view, I understand that time was used efficiently to deliver instructions and what the groups need to do. For learning, the time was not efficient for the students. Based on classroom management, guidelines would somehow not have gotten to the interests of the entire class having in mind that there were noise and movements from time to time. This can be attested when one of the ladies went out and came back, and at one instance, a lady student went ahead to talk to the teacher.
How does the teacher manage behavior in the classroom? How are problems prevented or avoided? How are issues handled when they arise? How is desirable behavior encouraged? How are distractions or interruptions addressed?
The teacher is fair and acknowledges that the grade he is handling are grown-ups. The teacher chooses to be blind to all the misgivings in the class. The better part of the video shows problems being avoided. Desirable behavior is handled by the teacher understanding the students have the right and can pursue what is right without being followed so strictly.
Where the students engaged in the lesson? How do you know?
The students were limited, and from the video can be heard only suggesting the number of days one can use to travel around all the planets.
Was there a lot of student talk time allowed in the class? Or, was it all teacher talk?
A significant amount of time, the students remained silent and only waited for instructions from the teacher. The is only one instance where the teacher asks on the number of days one can take to travel around all the planets that the students can be heard talking.
What does the teacher do exceptionally well?
The teacher is unique, and he can be seen by using technology to deliver information to the subjects. The use of examples (direct examples) from one slide to the other on what the students need to do makes the teacher exemplary and knowledgeable on the topic. The teacher is empathetic, and this can be seen in the intonation when the lady student gets to his table for some queries. The teacher is seen to be very audible and keeps his attitude high, and that also encourages the students to have their position high as well.
What are some areas of improvement that you noticed?
It is quite absurd that the teacher consumed the better amount of time to deliver information and what he requires of the students. In subsequent classes, I would suggest the teacher take time to teach the students and give more time to students to interact with him regarding the lesson and have time for questions in case any of the students did not understand.
Was there a particular activity/strategy that you saw that you would like to try in your classroom?
From an honest perspective, the use of technology and straight forward examples are exceptional, and I would love to have the same in my class. The freedom to have the students arrange themselves in class is amusing due to the benefits that come along.
What types of lessons/activities are taking place? In what ways do the students interact with each other, and with the teachers present? What kinds of instructional strategies does the teacher use? Be specific and give examples.
In the second video, the teacher is having a class of students where she gives the students time to prepare for their quality and even asks them to place their pens on the paper when they get ready for the lesson. The teacher goes ahead and checks the student's progress. The instructional strategies used are individual, and this can be seen whenever the students answer the questions.
How does this classroom arrangement contribute to or detract from the learning environment? What are things beyond the teacher's control?
In the second class, the students are arranged in rows, and they are not limited to their sitting positions; this is clear because the teacher has access to every corner of each individual. Some of the things that the teacher cannot go beyond is the willingness of the student to respond to the questions.
Describe how time is being used in the class. How much of the time is used for actual teaching and learning activities, and how much for administrative or logistical activities (such as passing out papers, lining up, etc.)? Is time utilized efficiently? Is there a loss of instructional time because of classroom management issues? Give examples.
In this class, time is distributed evenly in teaching, asking, and answering questions. Time is used efficiently, and thus there is a proper use of time as no problem is left unanswered.
How does the teacher manage behavior in the classroom? How are problems prevented or avoided? How are issues handled when they arise? How is desirable behavior encouraged? How are distractions or interruptions addressed?
The teacher is equipped with the necessary skills, and this can be seen where the student walks in front of the class and makes sure whatever the teacher instructs her to do is done, and she gets back to her sitting position. Problems are handled in strategic ways, and they are allocated enough time, which encourages desirable behavior and thus giving no room to distraction.
Where the students engaged in the lesson? How do you know?
Through question and answer platforms, the students are in a position to air their views and thus proving the class is interactive.
Was there a lot of student talk time allowed in the class? Or, was it all teacher talk?
The time was evenly distributed because the students talked to the sufficient levels where they were allowed by the teacher.
What does the teacher do exceptionally well?
Giving students a chance is an excellent way of teaching. The passion she teaches with and the desire to have the students grasp the content is super beautiful.
What are some areas of improvement that you noticed?
I realized the teacher covers a small amount of content within the teaching time.
Was there a particular activity/strategy that you saw that you would like to try in your classroom?
Student-teacher interaction is an excellent strategy, and when embraced in a classroom, none of the subjects will be left behind in class.
