Introduction
The Mirror claims that during the lockdown, people have been briefed that the general public does not need to wear face-covering while out. However, today, Transport for London has issued a warning to the passengers to wear face masks on public transport to stop the contagious spread of coronavirus as people tend to resume work as stipulated in the new lockdown rules. The Mirror urges people to make face masks that cover the nose and mouth and, at the same time, allowing a person to breathe comfortably ("403 forbidden," n.d.). People are encouraged to wash their hands before putting on or off the face masks. The Local reported that the Spanish Ministry declared that face masks must be worn on the street and closed spaces, which are places that social distancing can be observed. The regional health chiefs agreed that face masks must be worn on the street and closed spaces following the statement released on Monday, 18th May ("Notitle," n.d.). Face Masks are recommended as health toolbox alongside social distancing and handwashing. Although wearing face masks does not offer full protection.
Similarities
In the two magazines, there is an effective use of presentational features in terms of pictures. In "The Local," the picture of the man with the face masks makes it seem more practical as a human being is wearing it. In this way, it matches the headline, which specifies the mandatory wearing of face masks. Inside "The Mirror," the wearing of a mask is similar to "The Local," but offers a more tutorial way of making the face mask at home, which also matches the headline. The other similarity is that the two newspapers aim at teaching the importance of wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Differences
In the two articles, the lead paragraph is designed to have a greater influence on the audience where the story is summarized in a short space. The lead paragraph targets the people who can hardly have to read the entire magazine. In this context, "The Local" has bold and simple writings, full of sensational and emotional language such as "mandatory face mask rule" to exaggerate the story. In the two newspapers, the lead paragraph is short and straight to the point, but "The Local has failed to mention the doubt expressed by WHO over full protection of wearing the mask ("Notitle," n.d.). From this perspective, readers can understand that "The Local" is being biased with its facts. The Mirror is more informative and does not express any biasness of biasness. The lead paragraph states, "Coronavirus: How to make your own face mask at home." The paragraph itself contains less sensational language and more honest language with less exaggerated information. The local seems to be more tabloid as compared to the Mirror. "The Local" has focused much on the people wearing face mask than "The Mirror where more in-depth information is provided with fewer images used.
Learning
I have learned that the two culture uses images and photographs on the front page of the newspaper. I acknowledge that by doing so, readers become attentive to the information. The use of the image is relevant to the story in the lead paragraph to help to look at the picture and learn what the newspaper addresses. The use of pictures in the two cultures tends to showcase the ability to provide reliable data obtained with correct images of the scene. However, I have also learned that how information is presented across cultures is different. The Spanish prefer full sensational information as compared to English readers.
