Introduction
Planes crashing are common accidents that keep occurring every time. In most cases, these accidents are fatal because they cause the death of many people and destruction of properties. One is not certain where and when these accidents may happen since the plane may fall on the ground after developing a mechanical problem. On 3rd February 7, 2019, a small plane crashed in a suburban Yorba Linda neighborhood. It was on a sleek Sunday afternoon when fireballs came falling and crashing on a residential home. According to Orange County authorities, the accidents claimed the lives of five people when two others were injured.
Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Cory Martino confirmed that five people lost their lives in the fiery accident. The male pilot of the small plane aged 75 was alone in the control area of the plane. The pilot and four occupants (two males and females) of the house in Yorba Linda were killed when the plane crashed. The five people also sustained serious burn such that their body could only be identified through DNA. On Monday 5, 2019 the police had only identified the body of the male pilot. According to the sheriff's office, the Orange County Coroner is still working to identify those who died and notify next of kin. On Wednesday 6, 2019 Corner revealed the names of the four people killed in the crash. The officials identified them as Dahlia Marlies Leber Anderson, 68, and Roy Lee Anderson, 85 both of Yorba Linda; Donald Paul Elliott, 58, of Norco, California; and 48-year-old Stacie Norene Leber, 48, of Corona, California (The Independent News, 2019 para 2). Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Cory Martino also said that three people who sustained among them a firefighter were rushed to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries. The two individuals who were hospitalized suffered serious burn injuries but the firefighter was treated for minor injuries.
The small plane was later identified as Cessna 414A after the police took the spare parts that were scattered all over the neighborhood. Allen Kenitzer is the spokesman of the Federal Aviation Administration who clarified that the plane had left from nearby Fullerton Municipal Airport before the crash. Yorba Linda, where the plane crashed is approximately 33 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
Causes
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration started working together to determine the cause of the accidents. The witnesses of the accidents stated that they had a loud boom and smoke coming out of the cloud. Maja Smith is, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that the witnesses "saw the tail breaking off and then the wing breaking off and then something like smoke before the airplane impacted the ground." Kyle Vanderheide was driving when the plane crashed and he stated that it feels in several pieces along with atrial of smoke. The investigations carried out by the NTSB revealed that the plane 7,800 feet (2,377 meters) before it rapidly fell (CNN, 2019 Para 3). The cause of the accident was the out-flight breakdown as the flight could not stand a high altitude. The planes had two engines and one was found in the street while the other was found in the backyard of a house. Also, the cabin of the airplane was also found at the bottom of the ravine in the backyard.
Another cause of the accident was that the pilot was not qualified. It was not clear that Pastini, the pilot was trained because he possessed papers that there lost in the Chicago police department in 1978. His daughter and close friends reported that Pastini often flew to visit his family (Reeves, 2019 para. 6).
When the investigations started, Orange County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Cory Martino reported that Antonio Pastini in was a former Chicago police officer staying in Gardnerville, Nevada. However, Carrie Costanzo, a spokeswoman of the Chicago Police Department reported that he has never served as police. The police badge and the retirement papers that were found in the crash site were reported lost in 1978, Carrie Costanzo, revealed (Dobuzinskis, 2019 para. 4). The plane was old and with poor maintenance which could have resulted to crash as it was constructed in 1981. Simpson stated that the process of determining the maintenance history may take time but the NTSB will try to analyze it (The Associated Press, 2019 para 3).
Effects
The crash had severe effects on the local residents as it killed four people who resided in a home in Yoruba. The four were a husband his wife, their daughter and son-in-law. The accident caused loss of family bond since many people gathered to celebrate in the house. the home burnt was a beacon many friends and family held their celebrations there. The house was completely burnt and almost all properties were destroyed.
The incident also led to the destruction of the neighboring properties such as windows and houses. The crash was like a boom that shook many neighboring houses causing cracks on the houses and breaking window planes (The Independent News, 2019 para 3. The local people were shocked and panicked when the plane broke in the midair scattering debris across the neighborhood. Many run when they hear the explosions because they thought they their lives were at risk. The debris and smoke polluted the neighborhood.
Solution
Complete training of pilot is the main solution to avoid such a crash. Pastini may have not received comprehensive training because he was even using fake documents. The technology in the aviation industry should be improved to detect when one uses fake credentials like Pastini (Stone, Allen, & Shapiro, 2019 para 3). The aviation authorities should also detect any pilots operating with an expired license. The most probable reason why the small plane crashed was human error or poor maintenance. The Cessna 414A was made in 1981 and therefore it has been depreciating for many years. Such an old plane requires regular check-up to minimize break down when on air. Cessna 414A plane needed to be checked before departure and after arrival at the destination. The aviation officers need to check the weather forecast before departing at the airport. Although the weather was not the cause of the crash it has been a contributing factor in many accidents.
The most plane crash occurs due to human and maintenance errors. For example in 2005, an amphibious airplane operated by Chalk's Ocean Airline crashed near the Port of Miami, Florida. The NTSB investigated the accident and found that it was caused by "caused by the separation of the plane's right wing during flight, and that this had occurred due to dual failures in the airline's aircraft maintenance program as well as on the part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which should have identified and corrected the airline's inadequate maintenance procedures" (Slack Davis Sanger, 2018 Para 7).
When operating an aircraft, pilots are required to make many critical decisions and perform many actions that may lead to a crash. An example is the case of a 2009 Air France flight from Rio to Paris. The findings showed that the crash could be avoided if the pilot was careful with the speed sensors (Slack Davis Sanger, 2018 Para 7).
