Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, only preceded by cardiovascular diseases (Thelin & Sikka 2015). The emotional and physical burden it inflicts on patients and caregivers leaves many longing for the day there will be a breakthrough regarding cancer treatment. Unfortunately, most chemotherapeutic drugs are expensive and only work if the type of cancer is benign. Thus, as a scientist in the pharmaceutical field, I have developed a drug that will not only be affordable but also treat all forms of cancer. Using a series of experiments and following the scientific method, the final product will help many people.
The drug is in the form of a capsule with a generic name of Colexibin. Its mechanism of action encompasses anti-metabolism, alkylation, and anti-mitotic properties. The choice for this drug was inspired by the need to use a convenient route of administration (oral), eliminate hair loss as a side effect, and treat cancer even at its latter stages. Colexibin targets colorectal cancer which is the third most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in the United States. With estimates of 101,420 new cases (Thelin & Sikka 2015), the drug will undeniably benefit many individuals. The medicine treats colorectal cancer with dosages of 60 milligrams twice a day for six months needed for optimal effects.
Before the conception of the drug, tests were done on 600 individuals. They were all above 50 years of age and agreed to join the program after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer at various state hospitals. Some of them had a metastatic type of disease. The drug was administered for six months at their respective hospitals. 70% of the subjects were cured. Working with the Pfizer pharmaceutical company was crucial in the success of Colexibin. With their financial muscle, the company provided personnel and raw materials needed in combining the various properties of the drug. They also helped in supplying the drug to the various state facilities.
Scientific Method
Experiment 1 details
It is intriguing how most cancer drugs cause hair loss. Will Colexibin have the same adverse effects? With the hair-sparing properties of this drug, it is safe to hypothesize that subjects will not exhibit this side effect. The experiment will involve administering the capsule for a period. The subject's head will be examined monthly for signs of hair loss. Another subject on another chemotherapeutic agent will be used as a control variable. The results reveal that the patient on Colexibin will still have their hair. Indeed, the results support the hypothesis.
Experiment 2 details
Patients on stage four colorectal cancer often succumb to their illness regardless of the interventions done. Will Colexibin help such a patient? The hypothesis is that it has many anti-cancer properties and will treat metastatic cancer. The experiment involves using two subjects with aggressive disease and administering Colexibin to one of them and another drug to the other for six months. Unfortunately, both of them die, thus nullifying the hypothesis.
Experiment 3 details
Chemotherapy may cause fatigue and requires long periods of rest. Can Colexibin be administered without the need for rest? Since it is given orally, the hypothesis is that is does not require periods of rest. The experiment involves administering Colexibin for six months to one patient and another drug to another subject. The result indicates that patients on Colexibin lead healthy lives, but patients on other cancer drugs need long periods of rest. Thus, the hypothesis is supported.
