Describe: How does Dr. Oz get the audience ready for the content of the show? What does he do at the end of the show to be sure they got the main points?
For this assignment, I watched two full episodes in the ongoing season 11. Dr. Oz is a media personality and hosts his show with a lot of charisma and confidence. At the start of the show, he welcomes the applauding audience and introduces the topic of the day. The doctor starts by giving a brief history of the particular issue, poses questions, and tells the audience how he is going to tackle the questions. He addresses the listeners and speaks with a lot of enthusiasm, excitement, and energy. In the first show that I watched, he began by giving facts about mental health problems afflicting Americans. Dr. Oz then poses the question that he hopes to answer during that episode and introduces the present guests, giving a brief history. At the end of the show, he emphasizes the key points highlighted in the show to ensure the audience remembers them. Oz repeats the main points given by his guests in precise and straightforward ways. In one clip, he concluded by saying, ‘this is your take-home message for today…’ He also provided links to sites and pages for the audience to access additional information on the said topic. These strategies reinforce the main ideas to ensure members of the audience grasp meaningful lessons (Muijs & Reynolds, 2017).
React: How did you feel about or react to Dr. Oz’s show and instructional approach? Was watching this how helpful or useful to you, as a person and future educator? Support your reaction with examples.
Dr. Oz show is one of my favorite talk shows because I find it to be very informative. The host is enthusiastic, energetic, and knowledgeable in things to do with fitness and health. He is an excellent instructor and interviewer who plans his show systematically to ensure his audience follow and learn. From the show, I find Dr. Oz to be likable because of his carefree and friendly personality. His instructional approach is excellent, just like that of a professional teacher, which combine with the content that has catapulted his show to immense success. Watching the show was helpful to me, as I learned some useful tips to live a healthier life. Oz employed a variety of ways to make a lesson more meaningful, which I can use in the future as an educator. For instance, Instead of giving a monotonous lecture, he invites expert guests to help talk about a particular issue. This show taught me that teachers are instructors, but should step aside occasionally to let experts discuss some issues. I hope to apply this lesson in the future by inviting experts in a particular field to talk to my students to bring more meaning to the lesson.
Analyze: What strategies does Dr. Oz use that were part of the lesson on effective educators? Identify and describe at least four strategies of effective educators that you observed and describe how Dr. Oz modeled or used that strategy. Be sure to use the academic language from the lesson in your answer.
Dr. Oz uses a variety of strategies of effective educators during the show to convey his points. First, he showed great enthusiasm for teaching his audience how to lead a healthier life. He was confident and seemed to be passionate about the topics he teaches in a particular episode. Most of the things that OZ teaches about are educative and valuable as his goal is to make the lives of his audience better. For instance, one of the shows that I watched talked about how individuals can determine the best workout routine, depending on one’s personality. The host had invited an expert trainer and made the show enjoyable by including demonstrations in which he participated. Just like in the lesson of effective educators, Oz used variations in speech, facial expressions, and gestures, all of which showed how enthusiastic he was about the topic. He would also move around the stage and encourage members of the audience to join him.
Dr. Oz also used business-like behavior to convey his ideas. The business of his show is learning. People go expecting to learn how to lead fit and healthier lives. His presentations are goal-oriented, with most of them being about weight loss, healthy diets, and boosting immunity. In recent months, Dr. Oz has been focusing on the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and has been using the platform to educate people on effective preventive measures. His show is different from the rest; he treats everyone both guests and audience, thoughtfully and professionally. Oz always begins by clearly describing the purpose of the lesson and sticking to it. In addition, the physical environment is conducive for learning; it consists of a raised stage with screens and other materials where the host and other instructors stay. The audience section is below and near to ensure every person can see and hear whatever is happening.
Dr. Oz also used the aspect of variety in his teaching. He employed different strategies to interact with the audience, such as giving examples, asking questions, and demonstrations. In the clip about the best workout for personality, he challenged members of the audience to join him and the instructor on stage to try out different routines. Oz provides instructions using not only words but also actions. One of his most viewed videos is about COVID-19 safety. In that show, he taught the audience how to wash hands according to the World Health Organization’s guidelines. He demonstrated all the steps in the process instead of just telling people how to do it, which increases understanding and retention. Oz also used videos and images to provide information, which Muijs and Reynolds (2017) commended.
Instructional clarity is another strategy employed by Dr. Oz. All his shows are well organized without hitches or mistakes, implying proper preparation. They flow well with ideas building on each other in logical and straightforward ways for the audience to follow. In all clips that I watched, Oz always explains concepts and structures lessons to provide a clear and accurate understanding. The host starts each show by informing the audience about the objectives and providing an overview of the topic using facts. To prepare the audience for the episode about bets workout for personality, Dr. Oz tells the audience that he is going to show them how to boost energy without caffeine or sugar and lose weight. He then proceeds to elaborate on the concepts systematically, emphasizing the main ideas.
Conclusion: Which strategies did Dr. Oz use that would “work” for you? Which strategies wouldn’t be as effective for you, as a learner. Explain why.
Dr. Oz’s enthusiasm and passion would appeal to me as a learner. A confident and lively educator who demonstrates concepts practically would stimulate my interest in a particular topic. Also, the inclusion of the audience and the use of expert guests would work for me. I would want to learn from someone else who has more expertise in the field and participate in the demonstrations. However, sitting for one whole hour listening to one person may be dull and tiresome. I would need to have frequent short breaks to break the monotony.
Conclusion: What can you do to develop strategies that will make you an effective educator?
Observing more educators like Dr. Oz is one way I can become an effective teacher. I could learn the different strategies to convey ideas and encourage learning by watching how other experienced people do it. Also, practicing whatever I learn can be beneficial. I could try out the approaches to my students to determine which ones work best. Reading and exchanging ideas with colleagues can also be a way of learning how to become an effective educator.
