As I lay down on the beach, a sharp pain on my thighs woke me up, only to realize that it was a seagull picking at me using its razor-sharp beak. The beach looked like a scene from a horror movie; there were bodies scattered all over, with some missing limbs and others burnt to loss of recognition. The sight was so sickening that I threw up, having never seen one like it. I cried out to know if I would get any kind of response, and get the satisfaction and solace that there were other people, but my call only returned to me like an echo. The reality that I might be alone in an unfamiliar island started downing on me, and I immediately broke down into crying, due to the sight that was there, as well as the fear of being alone in such a spooky place. The sun would be setting soon, and I knew that I had to get somewhere safe where I could hide from any unforeseen danger on the island.
I found a hollow cave that I saw fit to spend the night in and headed to the beach for a scavenger hunt to find something which could serve as a blanket and help me survive the cold night that was fast approaching. I was lucky enough to find a jacket that was slightly burnt, and I headed back to my selected shelter for the night. The night seemed to be like a thousand days, and as it slowly moved along, I was unable to find any sleep due to the aches and pains that were in my body, and also the fear of wild animals that may find their way into the cave. I drifted off to sleep at around 2 am, according to the wristwatch that I still owned. No sooner had I slept than flashbacks of the crash started coming to me. I was on a plane headed to New Zealand for the promotion that I had looked forward to since the day I started working on Jefferson and Sons Corporation as a paid intern, and the last five years had been dedicated to working diligently and earning favor in the eyes of my seniors. I had been made the youngest junior manager ever, and now I had been posted to New Zealand for my promotions as a manager, to gain the required experience. After working there for three years, I would be sent over to the New York head office as a senior manager as well as being given a partnership into the company. As I was on the plane, thinking of my life and the achievements I had reached thus far, the plane experienced turbulence, and the captain reassured us that such turbulences were expected. Just as he was done encouraging us, the plane started plummeting downwards in a nosedive, and everything went dark, amidst screams of terror, and the next thing I remembered was waking up on the beach.
Despite the flashbacks, I was able to catch some sleep, and eventually, the sun rose, and with it, pangs of hunger. I decided to gather whatever I would be able to from the forest and eat it, hoping that whatever I ate would not be poisonous to me. I found some ripe apple-like fruits, and my hunger did not offer me a chance to rethink the situation or argue on whether the fruits were poisonous or not.
I ate to my fill and took some more in the pockets of the jacket I had picked on the beach the previous day. Next, I went to look for clean drinking water, but there was none, so I opted to drink the salty water of the ocean, which was an uncomfortable experience and, as I soon realized, was only adding to my thirst. I tried exploring the rest of the island, but I got scared of going too far, for fear of the danger that might have been lurking in the thickets. I reverted to going back to sleep and only woke up late in the night to munch on the remaining fruits that I had picked.
On the next day, I rose immediately when the sun rose with a resolve to explore the rest of the island and find a way to get out. I headed eastwards in the direction I had not explored the previous day, and fate started handing out pleasant surprises from then onwards. First, I saw a suitcase that on opening I found to contain clothes, some snacks, and water. I ate the snacks, leaving some for the next day and changed into better clothes that had no smell of smoke or being torn. I continued with my journey eastwards, believing that luck was on my side, and I took the suitcase as a sign. As the evening was approaching, I heard chatters of children playing joyfully, and I thought that my mind was playing tricks on me by giving me hallucinations. However, on moving farther, I saw children playing soccer, and they were as surprised as I was to see another person on the island.
They could not talk or understand English, but we communicated in sign language, and they soon led me by hand to a further clearing where there were adults. I tried using sign language to communicate with them but was relieved when one spoke to me in English. I explained my situation, and he responded by telling me that they had heard the explosion but dared not go in that direction, fearing that it was evil spirits that had descended on that side of the island. That day, I slept on a bed for the first time in three days, and in the morning, the people of the village had already sent word to the mainland of what had happened, and later in the day, there were rescue parties on the island to assess the damage. As I was headed back home, I started the little things that home signified, and have been more appreciative of them.
