My name is Myung Jun Yu, a member of KM College at Phila Antioch. Having lived in the US for closely three years, I got an admission at the Delaware County Community College (DCCC) as an international student. Before enrolling for my major course, I first had to enroll in ESL classes. However, being a member of the under 19 soccer team, I found myself spending more time playing soccer as compared to the time spent on studying English. I eventually successfully completed the ESL course but is yet to enroll for my majors. Studying in the US as an international student has its challenges as compared to studying in your native country especially due to language difficulties that international students are faced with. Luckily for me, my aunt staying in the US took care of me by ensuring first that I had the best environment for studying. As such, the challenge many students face in terms of finding accommodation was not a problem to me. Therefore, it was easy for me to transfer from college to university.
Being from a Christian background, it was necessary to attending church services at Phila Antioch Church which I found to be much bigger than I had initially thought of. Moreover, the church is accommodative in the sense that they offer sermons in English, Korean and Spanish languages. Since I wanted to get along well with Americans, I chose to attend the English service though it was evident that most members of the church were Korean. I later realized that most of the church members drawn from Korea had moved into America at an early stage of life, around 9 years of age with their mothers and fathers being from Korea. While it was still a difficult thing speaking fluent English, the people I interacted with tried their level best to make me understand the English service. With time, I realized that the sermons were powerful and could follow and understand with ease.
Having completed the ESL classes, there was the need to move from senior high service to college member service there was the option of choosing either KM or EM college services. However, since my aunt was fond of going to church early, I found myself attending tow services, a practice that took place for a relatively long time. Through such, I realized that irrespective of language barriers, people could be united under the umbrella of one Christ. Moreover, is as much as I really struggled to attend both services initially, I harbored thoughts of choosing to attend one service then spend my other time after church doing other things for myself. However, it was difficult to switch since the service changed at the same time making me decide to attend Korean College service because there was also the inner drive to worship more deeply and interacting with my native language as well.
The Korean college service was precious in that it led to drastic changes in my life making me believe more in God as well as having a motivation to living in the US. Any moment I found myself facing challenges in the US, my brother in the unity of Christ took care of me by praying and at times attending to my needs. Being a passive person, it was always difficult to share everything that I was going through with my brothers and sisters. However, at the very time I was overwhelmed and opened up to them, they never hesitated in assisting me in whatever manner that I needed assistance. As such, we got used to each other and realized how much it was a necessity to be with people who understood you and all that you are going through. Initially, my major was Engineering, but at the moment I have had a change of heart and is thinking of pursuing Actuarial science after God gave me a vision for the latter. As such, I will transfer to Temple University. I remain deeply indebted to the members of Antioch community. I have resolved to continue sacrificing at the church for God and in future be a leader in the church so as to extend a helping hand to other international students who might be suffering like I did in my first days at the US. Most importantly, I feel that I should later spend much time in spreading the gospel and helping other people.
