It is an honor, and quite unbelievable that I am here today, standing on this pulpit to address these esteemed intellects from such an excellent university. I know. I am talking like I was never here. The air smells different, with a scent of success and a victorious aroma. Back in my days, all I could smell was fear, disappointment, failure, and sadness all mixed up with the smell of grass from the perfectly cut lawn by Mr. McGregor. When I look around, all I can see are smiley faces eager to hit the real world with enthusiasm and positivity. I am here, talking about how a nightmare school was to me and you all wonder, how did she get here? I'm guessing you are guessing there's a story, and guess what? There is.
I was brought up in an isolated neighborhood with a single mother who worked in a beer garden and had a second job waitressing at a nearby hotel. While she was working a double, I was home doubling my babysitting work for a neighbor to at least afford my essentials plus some cool jeans to wear on Fridays. And as it sounds, I never had a one on one interaction with my books unless I was in class. I was so desperate to associate with a cool and famous group in school and I did everything I could and spent every penny I had to bring myself as close to cool as I could. However much I tried, all the girls in the class, the party queens, the nerds, the regular girls and even those from my neighborhood treated me like I was invincible. Finally, I made it about myself and no one else. Never waste even a single calorie trying to please someone else. They are all probably too busy pleasing others to recognize your jaw breaking efforts.
The school was never my strong suit, and I was struggling with my SATs, projects and possibly everything with school in it. I had shed off the extra weight of fake and unreliable friends, and I had all the time in the world to think about me. And mum of course. I thought about her every second that sometimes I didn't even notice I was. I cut down on the cool jeans expenditure and my minimum wage rage attitude. I took absolutely anything monetary as payment, and I started saving a big deal, at least it was to me. My grades were going down the drains, but my pockets were like, hey girl, we are almost up there. But among all the academic misfits I had, there's one course I was brilliant at. It was business finance. Finally, I had found, not a strong suit, but at least a fitting one. I could maneuver through the wordy problems and analyze them using the various financial documents and statements as ideally as I could change Ariana's diapers during my part-time hustle. Life will never present you with the thing you think you are good at. You have to find life in whatever you love doing, and you do it sparkly perfect.
Conclusion
At the end of my freshman year, I had made savings I didn't even for once believed I could. Starting a business was all my mind thought of, but I was way too low on capital that all that was doable with that money was buy a fancy iPhone to post unreasonable selfies I would regret later. I was so devastated that my entire savings were only 32 megapixels worth. Mama came home one night beaten up with sadness. She had lost her waitressing job, and we were again back to the insufficiencies we experienced in everything. I was double as pathetic as she was and I started up a mini, or rather a microfinance business. I could lend my savings to extravagant students, and they would repay it with a 20% increment on top. I progressed from earning five dollars a day to fifty dollars, and well, I am a managing director at one of the largest banks in New York. Do what you enjoy, and become the best at it. Thanks!
