Introduction
Hypertension (htn), also referred to as high blood pressure. It is referred to as a silent disease because a person does not usually know whether they have it as it has no signs and symptoms until later stages. Regardless the damages to the body are severe, leading to heart diseases. Htn is a common condition leading to elevation of constant pressure in the arteries. A person can develop heart disorders, which are caused as a consequence of the heart working under high pressure.
Diagnosis
Hypertension is diagnosed on the presentation of symptoms leading to hypertension. A patient's history is thoroughly reviewed, including a physical examination. A patient is tested when they present persistent headaches with dizziness, chest pain, blurred vision, and malaise or tenderness. The best way to diagnose hypertension is by measuring blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer. The blood pressure is the force in which the blood exerts a force on the blood vessels' walls. The pressure depends on how hard the heart has to work and the resistance in the blood vessels. The blood pressure is high when the heart pumps blood harder and the arteries are narrower. The force against the arteries' walls in the long-term can cause severe complications like stroke, heart disease, and even death. Elevated blood pressure ranges from a systolic pressure of 120-129 mm Hg and a diastolic pressure below 80 mm Hg.
The treatment for High blood pressure involves a combination of medication and a change in lifestyle. The medicines include Calcium channel blockers, renin inhibitors, Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and Calcium channel blockers. The change in lifestyle includes limiting alcohol, eating less salt and fatty foods, exercising and maintaining low body weight.
Types of Hypertension
Htn can be primary essential or secondary htn. These two types of htn account for at least 90% of all the cases. Primary essential htn has no identifiable causes, and it tends to develop gradually over time. Secondary hypertension occurs suddenly, mostly caused by underlying conditions. Secondary hypertension often leads to higher pressure compared to the primary type. Underlying conditions or diseases which can cause hypertension are sleep apnea, alcohol addiction, thyroid dysfunction, chronic kidney disease, adrenal gland tumors, and congenital disabilities. Other types of htn are less common but still important. They include resistant htn, malignant htn, isolated systolic htn, pseudo-htn, white coat htn, and pulmonary htn. It is crucial to know the type of htn to understand how to manage it.
Two levels define hypertension. Using the systolic and diastolic pressure levels. The systolic blood pressure is the maximum pressure from the heart, sending blood to the body. Diastolic blood pressure is the lowest pressure when the heart fills with blood, in between heartbeats. The two levels of measuring blood pressure are; the first one is a diastolic pressure, which is less than 80 mm Hg, and a systolic pressure of 120 to 129 mm Hg. The second one is stage one hypertension with a diastolic blood pressure of 80-89 mm Hg and systolic blood pressure of 130-139 mm Hg.
Conclusion
Different codes are used to denote different levels and types of hypertension. For essential primary hypertension, the code used is 110, essential hypertension is coded using 401.0, malignant is coded using 401.1, benign is coded using 401.9, and unspecified is coded using L10. The other codes are L15 secondary hypertension, L15.0 renovascular hypertension, L15.1 hypertension secondary to other renal disorders, L15.12 hypertension to an endocrine disorder, L15.8 other secondary hypertension, and L15.9 secondary hypertension which is unspecified.
