Introduction

In the medical practice, nurses play a critical role by working along the continuum of HIV care, including the prevention and the long- term management to palliative care. Ethical issues, especially the ones relating to privacy and confidentiality, experimental treatments, as well as reproductive rights, have taken a heightened emphasis regarding the HIV epidemic, particularly in Africa. In Nigeria where the problem is a massive concern, the disclosure of the HIV entails informing the children that they have a potentially life-threatening, sexually transmittable, and highly stigmatically condition.

Objectives

The study aimed at establishing the ethical practices of nurses in Nigeria as well as the ethical rights that should be observed by caregivers. Specifically, the study aimed at comparing Nigeria and South Africa to establish the impact of ethical nursing practices on the quality of care among HIV/AIDS patients in Nigeria and hence evaluate whether nurses' activities can improve the HIV situation in Nigeria.

Methods

The study deployed mixed methods of research where both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. Data were collected by use of questionnaire among 100 patients, 50 from Nigeria and 50 from South Africa, and 20 nurses, ten from Nigeria and ten from South Africa, who were selected randomly among different health institutions. A descriptive research design was used to analyze the data. All ethical considerations were followed including the confidentiality.

Results

The research established that nurses in both countries are aware of established ethical frameworks when dealing with patients. However, South Africa showed a higher adherence compared to Nigeria. From the analysis of findings, the ethical nursing practice was shown to determine the quality of care among patients with HIV/AIDS by 84.02%. The satisfaction level of patients with the nurses' mode of handling them showed that the South African patients were more satisfied with their nurses' current state (80%) compared to Nigerian respondents (64%).

Conclusion

Nurses have an important role in facilitating ethical practices. Therefore, ensuring that nurses understand and undertake specific measures when handling HIV patients can reduce menace in Nigeria.
