Introduction
With a rapidly aging American population and increased demand and access to the healthcare services, the statistical projection by the Bureau of labor revealed that there will be a shortage of around 1 million for registered nurses by 2025 (Mehdaova, 2017). Thus, the recommendation for nurses to improve their academic level is aimed at raising their capacity to offer quality services. Hence, attaining a baccalaureate degree will allow me to fit in this recommendation which requires an increase the number of nurse degree holders to 80% by 2020 (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016). I will acquire the competitive skills needed to serve ever-changing and increasing healthcare needs while increasing my employability chances.
In most cases, the doctoral degree prepares the nurses to provide nursing advanced knowledge to both scholars and practitioners. Hence studies have revealed that the proportion of nurses in their 30s and 40s who can accomplish this doctoral level task is shrinking (Broome, 2012). So, the need to double the holders of doctorate by 2020 is critical to accomplishing this goal. On the same note, I fit requirements in this recommendation as I aim to attain the highest nursing education and share the same with other practitioners and scholars. One of my long-term goals is to coach other nurses using my academically and practically acquired skills and knowledge to improve the quality of service delivery.
In a 2011 publication by the American Institute of medicine, recommended that nurses should progress academically, to enable them to provide competent care to the ever-changing health needs in the American population (Pho et al., 2012). Nursing is a field that is experiencing a rapid change in practice which is enhanced by technological advancement. Hence, nurses need to invest in building their skills consistently to enhance their capacity to deliver quality care. Similarly, I acknowledge the need to consistently upgrade my nursing practice which fits me in this IOM Future of Nursing recommendations.
Personal Opinion
Increasing my level of education will improve my chances of competing in the current job market. For instance, most employers are seeking nurses with vast experience in their area of specialization. Hence, through additional education, I will attain the desired level of expertise. Moreover, there are few nurses with a nursing degree which will make me a preferred candidate by employers in the job market. Moreover, the more advanced educational will enable me to conveniently handle a variety of healthcare cases across patients of different lifespans. Being an expert in my area of practice will lead to personal fulfillment and minimize experiences of burnout and job dissatisfaction.
Additionally, increasing my level of education will have a tremendous impact on my role in future nursing. For illustration, the American population is rapidly changing in structure and diseases are becoming complex to treat. However, by attaining an advanced level of education it will make my work easier and limit the occurrence of medical errors. Moreover, the American population is aging and in future competent nurses will be relied upon to provide quality care for the senior generations. Thus, increasing my level of education it will enable me to understand the use of new medical technologies in dealing with a health problem and enhance patient outcome. Furthermore, I will be an integral part of fulling the IOM Future of Nursing recommendations which requires the nurses to acquire competent skills to address current in future health gaps in the USA.
