Introduction
Being a pharmacist is the most prestigious occupation due to its direct impact on the life of the community members. A pharmacist is responsible for preparing and dispensing medicine which ensures that community members use drugs safely and to the benefit of their health. The unique and critical role played by pharmacists has significantly encouraged my zeal to become a pharmacist to be able to make a contribution in the community and save lives. My dream to become a pharmacist started while I was growing up as a random chance as well as exposure to situations that made me interested in the profession. Slowly through the exposure to pharmacology medicine, I become more attentive to pursue a career as a pharmacist to expand my scope and ability to help those around me to understand and use drugs safely. In 2010, I came face to face with my initial encounter with many drugs when my mother was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure which required a considerable number of drugs to keep the conditions under control. My assessment of my mother's polypharmacy made me wonder and worry of the many drugs that an individual can use at a go which requires high management to prevent any adverse drug interactions which could be fatal to the patient. Looking at my mother's polypharmacy developed an urge to know more regarding the pharmacodynamics and the pharmacokinetics elements of medicine. Every day observing my mother take her medicine dosages made me interested in further understanding of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes drugs function and the different elements that the patient has to be aware of when using the drugs to prevent violent and fatal interactions which could negatively affect the patient.
My initiative to study the functions of the medicine that was prescribed to my mother after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and blood pressure slowly made me love the pharmacodynamics and the pharmacokinetics of medicine and the desire to pursue it as a career. My character of being detail oriented has played the most significant role in my patience towards learning every aspect regarding the properties of drugs. My encounter with pharmacists in the family because my sister and father are both in the career have played a vital role in encouraging myself to be dedicated to learning to improve my knowledge and understanding of medicine. Despite my dedication and will towards learning, I have faced drawbacks towards advancing as a pharmacist. The primary disadvantage in my career was my failure to complete high school which I ensured it would not define my career future by working hard to pass the General Education Development which is an alternative to the High School diploma which has enabled me to go forward with the career. Since 2003 I have acquired expertise in the field by working as a pharmacy technician in both chains and independent pharmacies which have been vital towards acquiring practical skills in the practice. During my practice in the pharmacies, I was involved in patient counseling on drug interactions which helps patients to avoid harmful drug interactions which could affect the body functioning and also ensuring that patients make informed decisions by making them aware of the potential side effects of the medicine. I intend to join the pharmacy school to further my knowledge which will be of value to my community because it will enable me to positively participate in the community and also make my family proud.
