Team nursing is the common nursing care delivery model, which maximizes resources among the nursing team. The model supports professional nursing practices, which focus on the nurse-patient relationships. Team nursing involves a group of nurses who work together to deliver care through the utilization of education, diverse skills and qualification levels of each nurse. The group works collaboratively with joint responsibilities. This delivery care model relies on a registered nurse who is a team leader and who maintains effective communication and leadership skills. The total care model consists of a registered nurse (RN) who oversees the care and enrolled nurses (EN) allocated on a shift basis (Allana et al. 2014).

When assessing the effects of team nursing delivery model on patient outcomes, Fernandez points out that the model decreases the incidences of medication errors and adverse venous outcomes. The model is also associated with reduced pain scores among patients. Team nursing model does not affect the incidence of falls. In his study, Fernandez noted that there was a remarkable improvement in patient care and quality in wards where the team-nursing model was used. However, there was no difference in the incidence of infection rates and no significant differences in nursing outcomes on job satisfaction, rates of nurse absenteeism and job clarity (Fernandez et al. 2012). Also, a team nursing delivery model enables nurses with different experiences and skills provide safe care with direct supervision of experienced staff. However, this new role necessitates staff development and support (Payne & Steakley 2015).
