Introduction
Childhood obesity is a crisis, especially to the healthcare sector in the globe. According to the data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015-2016 report showed that approximately 1in five school-going children in the United States (Beal, 2016). Various factors have been associated with obesity among children. Some of the main factors include genetics, metabolism, poor eating habits, leading a sedentary lifestyle, amongst other adverse childhood events. Childhood obesity has attracted many research, discussion and strategies to minimize/ prevent it due to the devastating effects it can cause to children. Health wise, obesity is associated with chronic diseases such as cardiac conditions, kidney failure and even cancer. Psychologically, obese children may experience distorted self-body image, which leads to lowered self-esteem, stigma and also others have committed suicide. Economically, a lot of funds are spent on catering for health, social and psychological needs of this obese children, hence posing a burden to economic sector too. The aim of this paper is to discuss the take of different disciplines of academics on the matter.
Due to its effects, various academic fields have had different views about the subject of childhood obesity. The health academic discipline is in the frontline. Especially the public health sector concerned with the promotion of health and prevention of health hazards has had significant campaigns against childhood obesity. Through research activities and educating the public on the matter, the academic health field is world hard to ensure a low prevalence of this issue amongst populations (Wang et al., 2015). The discipline is as well incorporating both federal, local governmental agencies, private sector and organizations in ensuring full support in controlling the issue.
On the other side, the food discipline has it otherwise. More people are growing fond of fast food, this is despite these foods proven to be high in caloric content and leading cause of obesity especially in children. "junk foods" are cheap and readily available and ready to be consumed (Keshari, & Mishra, 2017). This is some of the factors that make children primary consumptions of these foods. Being business, the food industry is increasingly producing more brands of the kind, and increasingly vending them to reach more individuals. Vending of fast foods is the most growing business in the food industry.
The ideas behind the two disciplines are conflicting. There is a conflict of the concept. The health discipline is concerned with the risks posed by the issue to children as the future generation. The health discipline is as well taking into consideration the amount of funds used in managing conditions related to obesity. On the other side, the food industry is interested in doing business. Fast foods being the most moving products in the market, more fast food production and vending is experienced. Most of their advertisements and vending sites target this young generation who are their primary target population. The costs are also made favorably low for the young generation to afford.
Despite the two fields of discipline, there are many more disciplines interested in the issue. The political field is one of them. I believe in a healthy community. When the community is healthy, many more things can be achieved. Therefore, my take is to reduce the prevalence and occurrence of the issue. Allowing children to engage in practices that ruin their future life is unfair. Most of them engage in such activities due to lack of insight. So there is a need to stand up for this young generation, and resist any practice or issue that will affect them negatively. We are the children's ears, eyes, and voice. Hence we must speak up on their behalf where necessary and not use them for our good while ruining their life.
Conclusion
Childhood obesity is a concern not only to health discipline but many more other disciplines. It is out of its effects on children that the issue is attracting attention to many. Increased use of fast foods is among the many factors that have been associated with childhood obesity. Numerous factors have been linked with obesity among children. While vending of fast foods means business to the food industry, to the health sector, it means disaster especially as far childhood obesity is concerned.
