1. Introduction
COVID-19 is a new pandemic that has hit worldwide, and the medical professionals are tasked with research, testing, treating, and prevention of the virus. As a new disease that is yet to study with high alarming infection rates conclusively, hospitals have developed units reserved purposely to handle cases of persons with COVID-19. Before opening the Unit, it is essential to begin by identifying the existing problem, which is the new pandemic COVID-19. Staffs need to be educated on possible hospital adjustments that need to be implemented during the pandemic preparing themselves and families during the outbreak. All medical personnel should be educated about the pandemic alarming statistics, causes, and symptoms of the diseases and prevention measures. Staffs need to be trained on practices and standards to maintain to reduce the chances of COVID-19 pathogens exposure and preventing the spread of the virus. Staff should be educated on how to handle patients and advise them on the new unit standards.
2. How do you Motivate Workers on this New Unit?
Well motivated employees show increased commitment to their work and organizational goal. The leader's roles to ensure all employees are included in the unit projects are well motivated by creating a working environment that improves employee potential through training and individual development. To maximize employee potential and productivity, employees need to remain motivates both intrinsically and extrinsically. Intrinsic motivation is within, and it pushes an individual to be productive, this can be achieved by helping improve individual aspirations. Extrinsic motivation can be used whereby the employees are motivated towards a goal through reward. The leaders in the Unit can accomplish both by creating a harmonious working environment and creating a working culture that recognizes every employee's progress and input. It is the leader's role to ensure all nurses are included in the unit projects by giving them a chance to air their ideas and incorporate their insights into the Unit's development.
3. How Will Evidenced-Based Practice be utilized on this Unit and how Will
COVID-19 is a new infection, and so it will be essential to implementing evidence-based practice in the Unit, encouraging research-based procedures, and policies. The Unit interdisciplinary team should work harmoniously by creating open communication channels, development practice standards, protocols, and practical unit guidelines. The Unit should the made accessible to a well-equipped resource center with all educational materials and technology such as computers to help the staff in research, training and in data interpretation. Staffs employed should be well trained and should work harmoniously, to improve employee services; the unit can hire trained consultant and researchers. The unit leaders need to work closely with other employees to improve practice and encourage a supportive working culture.
