When students graduate from college, they have great hope that they will manage to secure employment and advance in their careers. However, various issues arise that make life difficult including the inability to secure employment, lack of experience, and organizations closing their operations. Some of the measures that these graduates can take to manage these problems include first working on an unpaid basis, seeking jobs that are offered online, and seeking internships.
The emergency of COVID-19 has caused a significant number of problems in the world ranging from university graduates lacking employment. After graduating, they have resulted in making application of job opportunities in various entities but the process is proving difficult for the majority of the businesses in the current economy are even laying off their employees. Therefore, securing work for these students is a tough hassle that is not likely to be simpler either in the coming days. Having unrealistic expectations is making matters worse for they think that they should be employed immediately after leaving colleges based on their qualifications (Petersen 2016). They are becoming frustrated with life and a good number of them are falling to the use of drugs. Taking this move is destroying their lives and there is a need to ensure that the right measures are taken to combat the problems.
Additionally, the fact that companies have closed down their operations is making it challenging for graduates to find employment. Organizations have taken measures to limit the spreading of COVID-19 among workers, and this is making people remain at home in a jobless state. It may take some time before the world economy can recover from the issues created by COVID-19, and this means that they will continue to suffer.
Another challenge that the graduates encounter is a lack of experience. There is high competition for the few available employment opportunities in the world. The recruitment agencies are selecting highly qualified personnel, and this is making the graduates miss a chance to join the companies of their choice. The graduates’ poor interview and negotiation skills are depriving them of an opportunity to become part of the workforce in their desired sector.
Despite the many challenges that are facing the graduates, they can first seek ways in which they gain experience through an internship. The companies that are still operational can recruit the graduates and provide them with a chance to understand how work is done. The experience gained will make them better placed in the economy to secure employment. In addition to the internship process, the graduates can also join entities that will allow them to take unpaid work (Patrick 2019). The move will enable them to gain experience and have a chance to secure employment when an opportunity arises in that company.
The emergency of COVID-19 has led to many people opting to work online and from their homes. The graduates should be willing to take the online activities that are offered by the various businesses even though they may not be paying well (Pisman & Molinsky 2019). They should lower their expectations and accept that they have to start from lower levels and grow in their work process as they gain more experience.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the emergency of COVID-19 has adversely affected the graduating students for they cannot manage to secure employment. Many of them left colleges with high hopes that their good grades would secure them employment, but this has not been the case. Additionally, many companies globally have shut down their activities, and this is reducing the chances of graduates to secure employment. The few remaining companies are only recruiting experienced personnel and the graduates most of the time lack the desired experience. Their poor negotiation and interview skills are making matters worse. Some of the measures that they can take to handle the challenges may include first seeking an internship, accepting low-paying jobs, and managing their expectations.
