Introduction
This is the most relevant quote in this era of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Corona disease is the only disaster that affected the world significantly since the 1918 influenza pandemic (WHO). The virus originated in Wuhan in China in December 2019 but was declared by the world health organisation as an epidemic in March 2020. By the mid of June 2020, the virus has had a global death toll of over 454000 with other 8.5 million confirmed cases across the world (WHO). However, it is not all gloom as over four million people have since recovered from the virus and this can be attributed to their strong immunity (GarcÃa-Salido np). The Coronavirus comes from a family of diseases that causes unless such as common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) that is why misdiagnosis for the common cold was common at the beginning of the pandemic. The Coronavirus can circulate in animals and there are many cases of an animal to human transmission. By examining the impact of Coronavirus, the author argues that if we continue to behave normally during the Coronavirus pandemic, the disease will deal with us abnormally.
Symptoms of COVID-19
Coronavirus shows some of the symptoms that are common in other diseases from the same family. The symptoms include fever, coughing as well as breathing problems. As the disease progresses, pneumonia and organ failure are evidenced which can end in death if not immediate proper mediation attention is given (Werthmann and Kienle 23). The disease may be asymptomatic at the beginning but the incubation period is estimated to be from one to fourteen days. COVID-19 is highly contagious even before the symptoms start to appear and this may be the main reason why it became an epidemic as people were infected and the asymptomatic people interacted with others without knowing.
Self-Protection
Without testing, it was difficult to know if one has a Coronavirus in the beginning as they would still interact and mingle with the healthy people and this is what fuelled the spread of the disease. It is therefore advisable to protect oneself from fluids coming from other people either through sweat, spits, or exhaled air or whenever one sneezes as the tiny, more often invisible droplet the come from the sick people when they cough or sneeze are the primary ways by which the disease is transmitted (Samarathunga 14). With the higher levels of spread and severity, it is important to note that self-protection is very important especially when going to interact with people. For example, it is important to maintain a social distance of more than one meter from others especially those who are coughing or sneezing.
Secondly, it is important to always cover one’s mouth and nose and if possible, an even the face as the virus enters the body through openings such as mouth nose and pores in the eyes (Mahboob Ali 24-29). Additionally, it is important to ensure that hygienic condition are kept by washing hands thoroughly with a lot of running water and soap. One should avoid contacting surfaces in public that might be contaminated by a member of the public such as door handles. The use of sanitizer is highly recommended whenever one has shaken hands with the public water is not available. It is also important not to touch the face, eyes, or mouth before washing the hands.
Conclusion
COVID-19 has affected all aspects of life in 2020 leading to changes in the work programs and systems movement, business operational and lifestyles. Schools were closed and flights stopped to contain the disease. However, it will go down the history books as the world worst epidemic of the decision. There are many self-protection guidelines from both non-governmental organizations and the government. It one everyone’s responsibility to stay safe to stem to spread of the disease, without which wearing masks and lockdown will be the new normal lifestyle. It is important to note that the Coronavirus has not been vaccine despite the concerted efforts by different interest groups to develop ma vaccine.
