Nursing has always been a great path to success especially for anyone who is looking for a career that entails healing, helping and nurturing those that are within their surroundings. Becoming a nurse is one among the most rewarding career path that one can pursue with the dedication of every professional hour to helping and giving medical help to others (Parandeh, 2015). As a competent nurse, there are some of the core values for me that I believe will be assets to me in my nursing career. Among the values, the main ones that will guide my path to success include; Professionalism and Ethical and Legal Considerations.
Professionalism is a critical value which incorporates the characteristics of a nurse reflecting his/her personal status. They involve the main traits regarding patients, others, self and even the public since they give a reflection of the nursing profession. As a professional persona in the field, I will strive to ensure that I will be knowledgeable in the subject matter, conscientious in my actions and also responsible for myself as well as others. For me, I will ensure that I employ the written standards as a basis for professional performance and practice to guide and direct my behaviors as a professional practitioner in the nursing field.
The other value which I will take as an asset to me in the nursing field is ethical as well as legal considerations. A nurse is always involved in planning, providing and evaluation of the nursing care, which is guided by ethical as well as legal boundaries. I believe that the nurses' code of ethics is a foundation for the ideal framework for safe and correct practices including the behavior. For me, I take ethical behavior to involve responsibility, accountability, fidelity and truthfulness. For the legal parameters, they are normally defined by the regulatory, statutory as well as the common law. In the care of clients in nursing, legal considerations incorporate issue like malpractice, negligence battery and informed consent among others. As a nurse, I will have to understand the legal boundaries for the protection of my patients and their rights.
Many nursing theories have a direct influence on patient-centered care. One of the theories is the developmental theory (Fawcett, 2012). This is a theory outlining the growth and development's process of humans as orderly and also predictable starting with conception and ending with death. In each stage, the progress and behaviors of an individual are unique. According to the theory, growth and development are mainly influenced by temperature, heredity, life experiences, health status, emotional and physical environment (Fawcett, 2012). In the nursing theory, there are main concepts which influence and determines the nursing practice. These include; the person (patient), the environment, health and nursing, i.e. goals, roles and functions.
The highlighted theory have an impact on the way nurses care for and enhance the patient's comfort ability. The nursing theory, as well as other theories, have advanced in giving guidance to the nurse managers. The managers in nursing normally face a changing landscape that includes the diverse workforce, increased accountability, new technology and a focus on the mind-body connection in healing (Walker, 2005). For the achievement of the most effective environment for healing, the nurses employ the theory in the development of the interdisciplinary teams which provide the most effective services in patient-centered care.
