Introduction
As a DNP prepared nurse practitioner, I intend to better familiarize with nursing concepts concerning healthcare policies. Admission into the program would help me in selecting a theory, establishing the purpose of the study, identifying all uses of an idea, clarifying on the characteristics, deciding a case model, determining a borderline, identifying antecedents and delineating empirical referents. The need to do so comes amidst the increasing complexity knowledge of healthcare warranting specialization to provide healthcare services better. Moreover, as nursing is broad, no individual can master all advanced roles and concept analysis that is requisite for those roles. Besides that, the program will enhance proficiency in refined assessment, and base practice in the application of relevant concepts in nursing science, cultural, socio-economic, political, psychosocial, and behavioral sciences in areas of specialty( American Association of Colleges of Nursing,2006). Cultural concerns are even more significant as there is a need for cultural competency to understand cultural diversity in the communities that nurses serve. Familiarization eliminates barriers to successful delivery of healthcare. Moreover, it informs solutions to culture-specific practices that increase vulnerability to healthcare challenges and disease morbidity.
A multifaceted approach replete with complementary services is instrumental in the delivery of successful healthcare outcomes. As a result, I intend to be part of the design, formulation, implementation, and execution of therapeutic interventions that are not only culturally sensitive but also based on multidisciplinary sciences. The DNP program will also help in the sustenance of relationships with the family member and other professionals to improve the delivery of healthcare and subsequent outcomes. Moreover, as organizations, at least from their definition are a group of people who in working together seek to achieve particular goals, they carry some complexities in that changes in one part affect others, the program will help me in finding solutions to organizational behavior and system complexities. Also, as am interested in mentoring others, (American Association of Colleges of Nursing,2006) reveals that doctoral studies guide through challenging situational transition, a skill that I will be able to pass on to others.
Policies inform action, and this would help in addressing some of the drawbacks of American federal systems that contribute to challenges in the overall healthcare infrastructure. For instance, regarding payments policies, I would advocate for the provision of free universal healthcare while developing mitigation measures to ensure quality is not compromised as the ease in access means excellent pressure on health resources. Moreover, it is of great interest to adopt participatory based approaches in which all stakeholders are involved in the analysis of health policies, proposals, and other health concerns.
Leadership is about convincing others through sharing a vision and objectives to gain the support without necessarily using coercion, and I believe that the DNP program would help me to better advocate for the nursing profession within the policy and healthcare communities. Moreover, the courses would help to address the historical injustices and racial discrimination in fostering social advocacy for justice, ethics( duty to care) and equity within all healthcare spheres. Disease prevalence is predisposed by a variety of factors leading to ease in occurrence among certain groups( cultural, racial, religious and ethnic), nurses and other health service providers cannot choose who or not to treat. Also, as an individual who has been involved in the Toombs-Montgomery C.A.R.E.S. Vidalia, GA program as the Vice President and Board Member, the program will supplement political activism and a commitment to policy development. In this regard, I would be able to better assume the full leadership role on behalf of the public and the nursing fraternity.
