Introduction
COVID-19 can be described as a mild and acute respiratory illness which is caused by a coronavirus, which is being transmitted mainly by being in contact with the infectious materials or being exposed to the respiratory droplets from the infected individuals (Poon et al., 2020). The disease is majorly showing signs when a patient is experiencing cough, fever, And having shortness of breath, which is likely to progress to pneumonia and respiratory failure.
The pandemic has caused panic and distress to every sector of the economy, as the says go the healthy economy is the productive economy whereby one must first be fit to be productive. Apart from the economic problems, the pandemic has caused a lot of psychological distress to society. And to different families who are now living with a fear of the disease. The disease has affected people from different demographic groups from women, men, children, and older adults. Mostly it has psychologically affected the people with lower income and those whose job has been abruptly cut and cannot easily access the medical care or meet their daily basic needs with ease.
The people who are taking care of the children during the time when most schools have closed have reported cases of difficulties when dealing with the children under their care. Parents with school-going children have also reported psychological distress. Apart from the distress cases of children, the coronavirus pandemic has touched stealthy and growing public health crises, which has called for the possible equal emergency response to all citizens. The disease, like any other pandemic, has created a lot of disturbances that involve the unknown threat, which turns out to be very difficult to detect at the beginning of the illness, which has created fear and anxiety for most families.
Most of the protracted and the dynamic conditions have affected humanity, which has increased the fear within the people (Sincero, 2012). The absence of the known vaccine has brought constant stress among the affected people, whereby most people have lost focus on the prevention measures; this is clearly shown by the daily behaviors of the people from the social interactions and the economic exchanges. There is always a lacks food from the grocery stores, which is Avery big concern to the community, especially the class of people who are feeding on hand to mouth (Wilson, 2020). There is panic from the tension which is created when people are struggling with the stockpiling hand sanitizers, and it has created a sense of danger to most people.
Gordon (2020) there has been an increase in the psychological distress among the nurses and doctors who are at the forefront of fighting the pandemic and helping the people who have been affected by the disease. The nurses have been affected, and most of them have contacted the disease on their line of work. The families of the health care workers have also grown fear of the parents bringing the infections home. Most of the people within the society have also developed stigma to the health workers who are interacting with affected people with the psychological judgment that they might be infected by the virus.
The older people within the community have grown fear and distress due to the fact that they are being asked to stay home as the most affected group (Rosso, 2020). The loneliness of being left to stay at home has deepened, and in most cases, they develop a mental illness due to fear of being exposed. The physically small children have had also experience emotions, which might further result in them lucking the development which is needed to cope up with the crisis. Many people have grown the mental health conditions when their close family members develop the symptoms of covid 19; this is due to the cost that the family is likely to use to help the member recover from the conditions.
Conclusion
Many people have been psychologically affected by the pandemic, and there is a need to involve the social community work organizations in conducting and giving guidance and counseling to the affected families. The government should give attention to the families who have been affected directly and indirectly to help them recover from the emotional torture.
