According to the IOM report, which is as a result of Robert Wood Committee, the effectiveness of nursing can be improved by looking at it from three perspectives; the nursing workforce management, the nursing practice, and nursing education. The report indicates that for improvements to be seen in the nursing profession, nursing education must be taken seriously, as this will increase the number of nurses in a state and lead to the deployment of nurses with the required skills and knowledge to offer professional services to the people (Bleich, 2011). Continuous further studies for nurses is also necessary to help them adapt to the use of the new technologies and to understand better ways of handling new diseases. In terms of nursing practice, nurses are expected to deliver services according to the medical needs of the patients. Transformations that are needed in the nursing profession should be geared towards rethinking the roles of most of the health professionals including the nurses. Structures and programs should be put in place to ensure that nursing in the future achieves value, access, and quality of health care (Kershaw, 2011). The opportunity aimed at achieving nursing practice that is able to avail the health services needed by the patients in the most professional way requires investments in advanced practice registered nurses who can deal with issues such as outdated regulations, policies and cultural barriers (Bleich, 2011). Lastly, the report indicates that strong leadership is necessity if a transformed health care system is to be achieved. The entire nursing profession requires leadership from as low as bedside nursing and as high as the boardroom to ensure that all departments are focussed on achieving the set goals of improving the nursing profession and practice for the future. The report gives a detailed discussion on the way forward in achieving better nursing experience for the patients through various education levels and specialties. Leadership training and nursing codes of conducts and ethics are some of the discussions that make the report an important one in realizing improved future of nursing in any state in the United States of America.

The importance of the report, in general, is to give guidelines on the way forward in improving the nursing profession for the better in future. The report gives guidelines such as nursing practice being geared towards achieving the specific needs of the patients. Different patients need different levels of attention and treatment. If nurses can understand this, it is more likely that they will give attention to the patients according to their needs (Kershaw, 2011). Being professional with patients require that a nurse become friendly, resourceful and encouraging to the patients to help them recover from their illnesses. Creation of patient-centered system can help the nurses understand the patients better and the patients to contribute more towards their healing process. For instance, in the case of the chronic illnesses, primary care such as transitional and coordination care should be rethought, and more regulations, training, and policies ventured into. Disease prevention and prevention of advance events such as acquiring diseases from hospital facilities be looked into and handled more professionally (Bleich, 2011). Again, to achieve success in the health care system and practice, changes must be made in the education system to address the changes aimed at better healthcare and nursing practice. Change management, quality improvement, and care management should be some of the important pillars in nursing education to help achieve the required changes in the nursing career (Kershaw, 2011). Since education is a way of instilling knowledge in learners, the requirements for the transformed nursing career should be passed on to the students as they train to become nurses. That would mean changes are made in the education system to incorporate the needed changes in the nursing career to help achieve better health care. Lastly, nurses should undergo leadership training to become leaders in their various departments (Kershaw, 2011). Training nurses to become leaders make them value the role of leaders as well as become better leaders who can help in the achievement of the transformations needed in the health sector.

Campaign for action is an important initiative in the achievement of nursing goals geared towards better nursing. That is because it helps the nurses have the opportunity of airing their concerns and getting the pieces of information to help them improve on their services to the patients. When nurses feel that they are not being allowed to exercise their duties professionally, the campaigns can become one of the most effective ways that they can bring that to the attention of the concerned people so that such issues are addressed (Campaign for Action, 2017). Again, issues of remuneration can become an important issue as it could mean the nurses are not motivated enough to deliver on their mandate. By taking part in the campaign for action, their voices may be heard, and the issue sorted hence making them more motivated to deliver to their patients appropriately (Campaign for Action, 2014). The campaign for action can also be a platform for sharing nursing experiences that contribute to the achievement of transformed healthcare. For instance, the campaign for action by nurses in Texas in the year 2014 presented them with an opportunity of chatting a way forward on how to implement the IOM report (Campaign for Action, 2014). In the campaign, the nurses came together to celebrate the plans they had of implementing the IOM report as well as share their experiences. Such platforms are important in achieving a better understanding of plans and goals set in the achievement of better future healthcare.

Conclusion

In summary, the IOM report is a roadmap towards better health care by presenting issues that can help in improving service delivery by nurses to the patients. Achievement of healthier communities depends on quality nursing activities in an area. Some of the nursing issues that people need to be addressed include reduced cost of nursing, better care and better health for the people, for instance; Texas is one of the states where the campaign for action work toward ensuring that the nursing activities are improved according to the guidelines in the IOM report. The report divides the issues into nursing practice, nursing education and nursing leadership.
