Explain the latest scientific evidence drawing from the fields of neuroscience, psychiatry, developmental psychology, biology and physiology
Children separation from their parents is a symbol of dysregulated stress reaction and distorted brain development. There are networks in the brain that are vulnerable to the consequences of parental deprivation1. The surges found in the stress hormones influence parts of the brain that process emotion among children. Ultimately, the subcortical brain structure that reacts to threat can be seized. Because of this, children who are separated from their parents show amygdala hyperactivity which means that their brain has a high propensity to signal danger even when it does exist. The prefrontal cortex also undergoes altered development2.
Identify short-and long-term costs of early childhood adversity and toxic stress on mental and physical health
Toxic stress and childhood adversity are severe mental issues that require the support of a caregiver. Short-term effects involve distortion of the neuro-endocrine-immune system that leads to persistent inflammatory condition with the failure of the body system to normalize after the stressor is attended to. These children are at risk of health effects that often manifest at adulthood. The long-term effects involve mental illness, poor stress management, and physical illness3. This means that parental care is an important part of regulating children stress and emotional development. During a child's early development stages, the mere presence of a parent reduces the level of cortisol and downregulates amygdala reaction.
