In our society today, the advancements in technology have delivered a significant impact on almost every aspect of the community. Majorly, it is presenting implications for the parent-child relationship especially with the conceptualization of neglect. Technology is delivering a severe shift in perception concerning how parents and children perceive society as well as each other. In most of the occurrences, technology today is changing from the perspective of it being just a "want" into a "necessity" in the human life. Even though an individual can highlight how technology is breaking barriers between the children and parents' relationships, the other side concerning the use of technology is creating a significant divide in the relationship between parents and children (Moawad & Ebrahem, 2016).
However, with the conceptualization of neglect under the involvement of technology in family relationships, the occurrence encompasses the behaviors of both the parents and the children as well. For example, children are having more screen time than required while on the other hand, the parents also have more screen time on their devices forgetting the need for family time. Lately, technology has moved from just mere gaming, chatting and messaging, to other activities such as video calling, assignment completion, YouTube, Netflix, along with other platforms that are coming along with the new technology development.
Correspondingly, in the critical analysis of technology impact of the parent-child relationship, neglect has been characterized by the occurrence of technology use, especially at home. There are different uses of technology today; however, in the strive to understand the underlying happening about the effect of technology in family relationships; it is critical to understand that parents are responsible for overseeing the activities of the children which leave a large part on conceptualizing technology on the parents (Whelan, 2006).
In consideration to the positive side of technology to the family relationship between parents and children, it has delivered significant delivered in the long run. For example, there is a coordinated change of plans. Through this, parents can inform the children of any change of plans for instance in the event of dinner or movies out without having to talk to them compared to the early days directly. Also, the children can inform the parents whenever they have an extra class and may get home late without getting the parents worried. Thus, delivering an impact between parent and children relationship. Similarly, technology has played a significant role in ensuring the reach of the family in case of trouble. It involves the ability of children to communicate with their parents in case of a troublesome situation or danger. Under this occurrence, the children have acquired the capacity to gain confidence as well as trust their parents to offer them safety in case of threat which is also helping the children grow without depending on their parents in everything. Hence, it is delivering a significant impact on the relationship between parents and children (Siddiqui & Singh, 2016). Furthermore, technology has enabled the interaction with family groups whereby members can communicate in a group on some of the serious matter that they may feel shy to talk about face to face.
Nonetheless, there are underlying negative effects of technology on the parent and children relationship. The occurrence develops as a result of conceptualization of neglect were by the parents involved in activities that imply a failure in their way to keep the family relationship healthy. First, technology is causing misunderstanding between children and parents thus degrading the family relationship. For example, there is poor face to face communication. In the current world setting, communication is drastically evolving, and people are relying on merely chatting. However, this is affecting the relationship between children and parents since it shrinks the level of confidence in children. Also, the parents cannot what the children are going through which in one way or the other deteriorates communication. According to Ante-Contreras (2016), without sufficient communication between parents and children, it delivers instances of conceptualized neglect.
Additionally, there is a lack of quality time. Sharing quality time with family is critical especially with the aim to maintain a healthy relationship between every member of the family. Currently, regardless of the attempt by parents to create time to spend with the children, technology is hindering quality time since in most of the occurrences the emails and chatting are consuming more than half of the family time. Also, the habit of working from home and forgetting to have a quality time is one of the primary reasons as to why many relationships between parents and children are failing as technology is comprising the quality of time families spend together. Technology is rendering complications and conflicts between parents and children as children are protesting for more screen time. Too much screen time is delivering a primary impact on the family relationships as the children are glued to the screens, so as the parents as they try to work and meet various deadlines. Interaction is essential in every family relationship since it maintains a personal interaction and bond the foster apprehensions of each other. However, with the lack of enough communication due to technology "Increased screen time," it delivers a paramount impact to the relationship between children and parents.
Conclusion
To sum everything, technology is administering enormous impacts on the relationship between parents and children. In the past, both parents and children could interact without worrying about the use of technology. However, today things are different. Technology is affecting the structure of the family relationship in diverse ways (Morris, 2015).
