Introduction
Be Safe Consulting, Inc. employed me as a consultant in the entry-level safety. I directly report to Bob Sanders, who is the certified safety professional. BSCI has been contracted by Acme Manufacturing Co. to conduct a study to determine employee exposure to various particulates and gases. Also, my company has been contracted to determine whether the current ventilation that is in place are adequate to protect the employees from exposure to the chemicals. The present paper will include a report that Bob Sanders can use to prepare a final comprehensive report for the board of directors. The paper will also include the details of the scenario, conclusions, recommendations, and the appendix, showing the measurements and calculations.
Report Details
Welding Room
The company has six welding booths. The booth is open to mixing in the top and the front. The company is worried about the exposure of employees to iron oxide. Sampling takes place, and the samples are valid because the sampling process has taken over eight hours, and the minimum time required for a sample to be valid is six hours.
Hazardous Materials Storage Area
The assessment aims to determine whether the hazardous material storage area is adequate and meets Acme's insurance carrier requirements. The requirements are that there has to be a minimum of 12 air changes per hour. The current materials storage area is inadequate as it does not meet the minimum requirement.
Foundry Room
The foundry room in Acme is outdated. For instance, this can be proven by employees inhaling gases and particles when they stand near an operation with a canopy hood exhaust. The particles and gases are harmful to the employees.
Conclusions and Recommendations
To reduce the employees' overexposure on ventilation systems, I recommend the introduction of engineering controls, whereby there is a modification of designs to the equipment, plants, and ventilation systems. In the case of hazardous materials storage area, I recommend the addition of the storage area to avoid problems that can arise.
I also recommend the use of air filtration unit. The air filtration unit is essential as it filters gases at different levels. HEPA filters are durable air filters, capable of cleaning 99.7 percent of gas particles. Depending on the contaminants present, different air filters can be used.
