Breast augmentation is the process of enlarging breasts. It is achieved through insertion of an implant beneath the breast to have it appear larger. For breasts that were larger initially, this process can be used to fill out. Women undergo breast augmentation process for some reasons. They seek to balance breasts that may appear to differ in size and shape. They also seek to enlarge and reshape breasts that have deformed after breastfeeding. Another reason is to enlarge breasts to achieve a more proportional body (Didie 242).

People who undergo breast augmentation process take up to three weeks to recover. However, there are new techniques such as the "no-touch" in which an individual can recover within 24 hours. The no-touch technique means that the surgeon does not touch the patient's ribs with any metal to reduce the impact of the surgery thus shortening recovery time (Quick Recovery).

Breast augmentation turns out to be an aesthetic surgical process that is becoming common. In 2011, 300,000 women underwent the process (American Society of Plastic Surgeons). For this surgical plan to be considered sound there is need for patient evaluation that involves assessing anatomy and psychology, implant selection basing on the profile, texture and shape of the implant with the type of filler being a critical aspect. Also, patient education should be considered and it should enlighten the person intending to undertake the breast augmentation on the risks involved, the available options and probable complications that could result. Some of the common complications include infections, deflations, chest wall deformation and even chronic diseases such as cancer and connective tissue diseases.

There are four main incision choices namely periareolar, inframammary, axillary and umbilical. The placement choices could be either submuscular associated with more pain, longer recovery time, difficult reoperation and less visible implants or sub glandular associated with less pain, shorter recovery time, easier preoperation and more visible implants (Rocco 34).

Whereas breast augmentation may be a preferred method of reshaping and regaining deformed breasts, anyone intending to undergo the process needs to be aware of the potential complications before making the choice. Nonetheless, research into safer ways of performing this process need to be uncovered to ensure that the thousands of people undergoing the process are safe.
