Introduction
From the article, Health Informatics - e-health, the author elaborates on the electronic health information system, its use as well as the level of support that it provides to the healthcare system. Health informatics is the exercise of studying, acquiring, and managing health data. Besides, it involves applying the medical concept in combination with the health information technology systems to ensure effective medical outcome and better healthcare systems. From the above article, the author has not clearly elaborated the concept of health informatics and instead, chose to go directly to the literature and the elaboration of the past studies. In most cases, integrating the introductory part in an article enables one to understand what is anticipated in the entire document. From the article, it is true that the integrated provincial electronic health information system is gaining momentum, however, this is not true in some places, there are some places that health informatics have never been applied. As a result, researchers and clinicians have not had the opportunity to evaluate the state of the health information system. The officials claim, however, generalize the situation without considering the fact that the application of the health information system has not been implemented in some areas.
In most cases, there is always the need for the researchers to consider different methods to be used in the study. The methodologies used should enable the researchers to answer the research questions that are to be investigated (Muijs, 2010). The choice of the methodologies thus depends on the research questions as well as a practical consideration. In some cases, the nature of the research, as well as the objectives, determine the kinds of methodologies that are supposed to be used. In the article, the author applied the qualitative research methodology; however, going by the data and demands of the study, the researcher could have employed the quantitative research approach. From the article, the writer makes comparisons and discusses the results of various studies that have been conducted by different authors. In most cases, before, embarking on carrying out a study or research, it is necessary for one to appropriate research methods that will best bring out results that can then be used in the formulation of policies. In some cases, there is always the combination of both quantitative and qualitative approach in one research. In the above case, the research could still be conducted through the incorporation of both the qualitative and quantitative approaches so as to ensure validity and confidence in the findings. To ensure confidence in the research, it is necessary for one to establish variables that drives a project and weigh the results against the overall goals of the project. In the above articles, the writer failed to incorporate variables and instead, chose to report data and findings from different studies that have been conducted.
From the study, the methodology applied was not appropriate. The author could have chosen to use a quantitative approach given the nature of the results and findings from the articles. Besides, it could still be appropriate if the author could have incorporated both the quantitative and qualitative research to ensure validity and confidence in the results and findings obtained (Agbele, Nyongesa, & Adesina, 2010). Even though the approach of reporting data from different sources was used, the readers could not be confident enough due to the change in time as well as different healthcare systems that always need to be investigated. Obtaining the row data and conducting the quantitative study in the best method of ensuring validity and confidence in the research.
The application of an integrated e-health system is one the rise, and every new concept is incorporated in the order as time passes. The validity, therefore, depends on the procedures applied in the establishment of findings that will best reveal the appropriate action that needs to be undertaken (Noble & Smith, 2015). The above situation, therefore, calls for the validity of the research. In most cases, validity applies to both the methods and design employed in the research study. In the above study, it is very difficult to claim the validity given the approaches utilized in the entire process. The article does not look like research but rather a literature review that can then be used in the validation of the quantitative results. With a valid process of data collection and analysis, the findings can truly represent the phenomenon that is under consideration or the variable being measured in the research process (Noble & Smith, 2015). In most cases, valid claims are solid claims that can be drawn from the data and the entire process of analysis.
From the article, the author alleges that the application of electronic health records increased between the year 2012 and 2017 in Canada (Agbele, Nyongesa, & Adesina, 2010). The above statement could have been substantiated through the application of data collected and recorded. Through the data analysis, the above statement could have been valid given the changing situations and processes in the healthcare systems. Therefore, one cannot gain confidence in the data reported as they lack practical references. In many cases, there are errors in the quantitative research processes, this means that by reporting studies done by other people, one will assume the errors made and only focus on the reports generated, a situating that interferes with the validity and confidence as perceived in the above article (Noble & Smith, 2015).
Even though the findings from the above article may not be proven, they are relevant useful in making various decisions. The findings have practical benefits as one can carry out new research based on the conclusions and results obtained from the above article. Additionally, even though some people are researcher may not have confidence in the data reported, the sources of information are valid (Agbele, Nyongesa, & Adesina, 2010). The author managed to incorporate an elaborate literature review that contains lots of information and data that could form the basis of other research on the health informatics and information management system. For example, from the article, the author elaborates that in the network of acute care healthcare settings housing over 42, 000 system, the users can share information including the diagnosis results (Noble & Smith, 2015). The data is useful while conductive quantitative research from row data.
