Introduction
I am applying to the Master's program at Stony Brook School of Nursing to pursue and enhance my personal and professional development in nursing. Since I earned my Associate in Applied Science in Nursing more than eight years ago, I have been committed to providing the best quality care to my patients at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore. Working as a bedside registered nurse in these years has enabled me to understand the needs of sick children and their families deeply. Furthermore, my ongoing nursing experience has enriched my abilities to conduct an accurate nursing assessment that can facilitate the identification of health problems and social concerns impacting a patient or family as a whole.
Even though providing care to children in a busy healthcare unit can be challenging, my nursing experience thus far has taught me how to establish teamwork and be a productive team player who strives to reach the best healthcare outcomes for all clients. An important factor that helped advance my workplace teamwork skills was working in an environment with many health care providers of various professional background and expertise. In practice, there have been some situations where I had to implement the concept of teamwork and assume the role of a team leader, especially during short-staffed shifts.
Another important attribute that I have gained as a result of my current nursing experience is the multidisciplinary collaboration skill which seems to be pivotal in the delivery of safe and quality patient care. In numerous occasions, the implementation of interdisciplinary collaboration in my unit demonstrated to yield the best and safest treatment options for all clients. As verbalized by many patients, the application of clear and effective communication amongst healthcare team members always brings trust and satisfaction to clients and their loved ones.
Even with all the qualities and attributes, I have gained through my nursing education and clinical practice for the past years; I have to admit that there are still some nursing qualities which need further improvement and development. This may include taking care of a problematic patient where I often find myself lacking the ability to produce quick and effective communication. In such instances, I usually withdraw myself from the situation and ask for extended help from a social worker or a more experienced healthcare provider.
My understanding of cultural diversity is comprehensive and has been dramatically influenced by the demographics of the Bronx where racial and ethnic diversity is prevalent. I, therefore, view culture competence as the ability to recognize and respect everyone's chosen way of living. This can include different faiths, languages, morals, and other practices people may prefer to follow in their daily life. At my place of work, we value cultural diversity and patients are always given the option to select the preferred language for communication. If a spiritual consult is needed, our medical center is pleased to offer chaplaincy and many other religious services to meet the spiritual needs of all clients and family members.
When it comes to leadership in nursing, I have been gladly taking the role of charge nurse at my unit for a countless number of nights. I have obtained my charge nurse skills from my fellow seasoned nurses, many of whom have been practicing nursing for over twenty years. The role of a charge nurse in my hospital includes assigning patient admission to nurses, supervising staff, providing equipment, attending meetings with the administrators, and solving any clinical dilemma that the staff may encounter on a daily basis. The performance of the charge nurse always requires me to implement clear and effective communication with my team to ensure the implementation of smooth and safe patient care. Additionally, as a charge nurse, adhering to the hospital's protocols and policies are essential to prevent errors that may impact the health outcomes of our clients.
My ongoing exposure to many unique clinical situations has provided me with extensive nursing knowledge which I attempt to apply during the care of my clients. To maintain my current expertise up to date, I always take advantage of the E-learning modules offered by the network system at the hospital which provide the staff with information related to any change of practice according to the latest evidence-based practices. Also, my continuous learning experience has been reinforced by the various nursing conferences that I have attended in the past few years. The application of knowledge from such conferences seemed to advance and expand my thinking process when developing and implementing a patient plan of care. Furthermore, earning my Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) title a few years ago has boosted my self-confidence in the nursing qualities I have gained thus far.
After many delightful years working as a bedside registered nurse, I have now decided to go back to school to earn a graduate degree in nursing. The decision is influenced by my great desire to advance my nursing knowledge and critical thinking competence so that I can provide a higher level of patient care. I understand that the path that leads to earning a graduate degree in nursing is long and complicated, but only by adhering to this path I can accomplish my professional goals in the field of nursing. I can envision myself being an excellent pediatric nurse practitioner, but I have yet to commit myself to an extensive learning experience that requires arduous work and immense dedication.
