There has been an ongoing debate about health issues and concerns that face different immigrants in the host country. The issue needs deep research on the target population so as to come up with effective and efficient methods of dealing with such concerns. Understanding the health issues and concerns and also having the required information on the target population helps in the formulation of correct methods of helping then in case a health issue arise. It also helps healthcare institutions and organizations in training their staff and also acquiring the required pharmacology equipment and treatments for dealing with the identified problems (Levey & Inker, 2017). This paper is a report on research conducted on Mexican immigrants population regarding the health concerns and issues they face. A major issue is the Mexican immigrants get viewed as sickly, unhealthy, and also a burden to the host country governments. They reside in cramped residence thus face issues of being crowded, lack safe drinking water, face bad sanitation and other problems.
Lack of access to healthcare makes matters worse as they end up suffering a lot by being unable to access treatment in the available treatment centers. The Mexican immigrants face health issues and concerns that are nearly similar to those of the native population, but they get magnified by the immigrants lifestyle. The language barrier also is a problem facing this immigrant. Most Mexicans are familiar with their language and thus communicating with a different one proves difficult. It leads to lack of understanding each other which in turn contributes to poor service. As a result, these people take classes so as to become literate in the native language of the country, they currently reside in, and that is at times difficult. Another problem is the difficulty of raising children in the new country with an unfamiliar culture. The immigrants try hard to hold on to their traditions and thus conflict arises due to the cultural differences. The practices of healthcare providers may at times clash with the health traditions of the Mexican immigrants thus hindering the provision of preferable services and treatments.
Poverty also plays a large role in the lack of the ability to access health care in the host country as it is often hard for the immigrants to have jobs. Lack of secure and conducive housing is also a health concern facing the immigrants. Leaving together in cramped, overcrowded facilities leads to the easy spread of diseases, and it is hard to control them due to poor sanitation in such housings. A study shows that many Mexican immigrants are undocumented thus they fear to access services due to the fear of being deported back to Mexico. This person will avoid visiting hospitals for treatment as they fear they will get exposed. Additionally, they are subjected to violence and even rape thus resulting in mental health issues. The problem arises when they cant seek help because their traditions and culture view mental health as a form of taboo. The immigrants also do not qualify for government provided health insurance, and many policies lack clauses that represent this immigrant.
Different pharmacology treatments are currently available for treating mental disorders and mental health issues among the Hispanic population from Mexico. Provision of this treatment is important as it contributes a lot to the overall health of the patient. The pharmacology treatments include tablets, injections, and taking prescribed oral liquids. The above treatments vary with the type of disorder the patient is suffering. Research shows that only 20% of the immigrants with symptoms of mental disorders seek treatment, and also only 10% of the people visit specialists and professionals (Paniagua & Yamada, 2013). Also, the people are very private about their lifestyles and problems especially when sick. Their traditions and practices view mental disorders and mental health issues as a taboo and also when seeking treatment they only allow minimum interaction with the doctors and nurses. Due to differences in culture and traditions, these people get misdiagnosed on various occasions as they have different descriptions of symptoms from the once known to the health practitioners. Mexicans also rely a lot on natural and homemade remedies for different health issues. Others only seek treatment from traditional healers due to their cultural beliefs thus it is rare for them to visit healthcare centers for treatment. They also have strong faith and spirituality and that at times act as a barrier due to misinformation.
Different strategies can be used by both the organization and the nursing staff so as to ensure the provision of the right information and treatment to the patients. These strategies are culturally sensitive as dealing with patients from different cultures require specified strategies. The following are strategies the nursing staff can employ in such instances:
Acquire more knowledge and improve skills through further learning and interactions with patients.
Performing cultural assessment on people from different cultures and backgrounds so as to come up with culture-based treatment and patient interaction methods.
Avoid cultural dissonance which leads to viewing certain patients from a particular background negatively thus hindering the provision of good healthcare.
Apply different rules and responsibilities set by the organization and the health fraternity as guidelines when treating patients.
Such strategies will play a big role in ensuring the nursing staff promotes health and wellness on the target population (Eldredge Markham & Parcel, 2016). Education forums will also help a lot in showing the people the importance of seeking treatment and advice from health specialists.
