Chemical engineering is one of the exiting courses and has high demand in the world. It applies physical sciences, economics, and mathematics to produce and design chemical products. The significant roles of a chemical engineer involve taking raw materials and designing processes that transform the materials into other useful substances. They work in different fields such as healthcare, environmental health and safety, food processing, business services, and petrochemicals.
I have always admired being a chemical engineer since my childhood. My special skills in sciences and mathematics have enabled me to enroll in the coarse. In high school, I was excellent in chemistry practical. This created solid connections with my classmates; thus, I played a significant role in their revision. I love analytical chemistry since it makes me feel at home. Its practicals bring out of me the problem solving skills which vital to the coarse. Seeing how engineers provide practical solutions to the real societal problems motivates me. After graduation, I would like to be an entrepreneur in the engineering field, owning a Company.
In this assignment, I will interview Mr. Levine Waldron, who is an associate research scientist and the owner of Quantum Chemical Company. His entrepreneurial skills are admirable and will help me shape vision in the future to achieve my career goals as I aspire to be an entrepreneur. In this interview, I will focus on the requirements of the occupation and the changes in the industry as technology advances.
Interview Summary
Background and Career Path
After graduation with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, Mr. Levine started his career as an intern in environmental and safety CompanyCompany. The company was mandated to ensure minimum harmful waste is disposed to the environment like carbon gases emission to the atmosphere. He was tasked in the data entry and analysis department. The CompanyCompany played a pivotal role in shaping the career path of Mr. Levine. He was able to learn how to use analytical software in data analysis; in that case, EPCOM international CHEMPRO Engineering Suite. As technology is improving at a fast rate, the use of software in the engineering field in design, simulation, and data analysis has increased. He later found it necessary to learn Autodesk inventor and COMSOL software in designing chemical reaction processes without doing the actual experiments.
A year later, he was employed as an application engineer in the Instrument Company. His duties were furnishing PH sensing equipment, installing solution tanks and accessories with piping and valving in chemical companies, and adjusting the pumps. After sometimes, the CompanyCompany developed an innovative way to appropriately check the valves to ensure accurate chemical delivery by the pumps. This devised way was known as Ball Check Theory since it made use of balls. Through these experiences, Mr. Levine developed a passion in process design. He started offering consulting services to various young companies in his part-time. This was the key behind his plans to run his own company. He also furnishes motor of various specifications depending on the application and the surrounding.
Later he was promoted to head of the department of instrumentation division. His work was to supervise the installation of instruments which were principally used in power plant for feed water and boiler water quality monitoring. The task involved visiting consultant engineers, especially in the mechanical field, power plants, and Power Company engineering sectors. In some ways, it involved testing and starting up the installed new instruments in those plants. Among the projects, Mr.Levine supervised are The Nuclear Ship Savannah and Florida Power 3 Bartow plant unit.
From the head of the department, Mr. Levine was transferred to the field sale in Chicago. He eventually became the company's s manager when his predecessor was transferred. The company hires managerial consultants to work with him for some time to develop a plan for the Company' company's operations to aid the sales department. This actually taught him the managerial skills he lacked. He was able to foresee all the operations of the company and advice on them. His promotions from the application engineer all through to the manager were earned by his hard work, perseverance, and creativity.
In his managerial post, he learned the importance of communication skills and teamwork among the employees. He insisted that a chemical engineer should communicate well to his team to avoid misinterpretation of instruction, which may cause the destruction of a process in a company. Ideas are expressed through excellent communication skills. Also, in the engineering field, teamwork is very significant. It plays a vital role in individual and company success.
After working for the same CompanyCompany for five years, Mr. Levine was determined to start his own empire. He said he was becoming a bit tired of being employed. He partnered with Dr. Adam Layman, his former classmate, and started Quantum Solution Company. They began as a consulting company in process engineering that is design, installation, and testing. At the initial stages, it was not a smooth ride for them. They had to establish themselves well through advertising and to keep contact with emerging companies. He has studied by himself managerial skills, which he applies to their CompanyCompany. After one year, the CompanyCompany expanded due to increased demand in the industry, and they employed several graduates. They eventually opened a chemical manufacturing plant.
Mr. Levine told me in order to have a successful career, the biggest obstacles to overcome are communication barriers and coping up with the changing technology. The technology is advancing at a much faster rate. Most chemical engineers find it difficult to adapt to the new technology in the market due to age or lack of interest. New process design layouts are invented, and this call for the engineer to be flexible enough to incorporate the technology in his or her design. It is also necessary to master written and oral communication skills to relay instruction and commands effectively. Some failures in engineering occur due to misinterpretation of instructions.
As a company owner, a manager, Mr. Levine, works more than 40 hours per week. For him to balance work and personal life, he takes a day or whole of the weekend off work to stay with his family and have fun. He likes reading magazines and keeping track of social media to keep himself up to date on emerging issues. There are pros and cons in the chemical engineering field. Chemical engineering jobs pay well averagely among engineering jobs. This is one of the advantages of the course rendering it high in demand in the market. Every industry needs a chemical engineer for its operations, especially the manufacturing companies. Also, chemical engineering is flexible with a variety of jobs. According to Mr. Levine, chemical engineers can fit in architecture, product manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals and research. The con is that the job is demanding. You are paid for your creativity. Making one slight mistake may harm your career.
Since I have a passion in industrial process design, I asked Mr. Levine to advise me if I should do my passion or find a stable job to make a living from it. According to him, people need their passion in selecting the courses. This is important because they will enjoy the career rather than being unhappy every day doing uninteresting jobs.
As the owner of consulting and chemical manufacturing company, Mr. Levine's duties are to advise the most economical and efficient process for production, guide companies in the installation process of new equipment, and also to give directions for upcoming chemical engineers. He has built a good reputation in the industry; hence he is a known figure.
Mr. Levine highlighted, most engineers lack teamwork skills in their profession. This causes a negative impact when instructing the subordinate; hence could be neglected or misunderstood. To be successful in Chemical engineering, one should involve working mates in a more interactive way than a dictatorship. This brings joy and a conducive working environment.
Conclusion
The interview with Mr. Levine was a massive opportunity for me to reflect on my chemical engineering coarse. It opened my thinking about my career before joining the community. Finally, I found the answers to the questions that clogged in my mind. What surprised me during the interview is how essential communication skills are to the engineering field. They are the vital elements that bring about clarity of thoughts and direction. I think it applies to all courses. The future skills I need to develop well are communication skills and the ability to work with a team, as Mr. Levine advised.
I admired how successful Mr. Levine was. I was forced to ask his driving life principle, and he told me, 'work smart and never give up easily, the world will appreciate you.' He motivated me to push hard in my passion in process design. His work ethics are admirable. I believe in the pursuit of my chemical engineering. I will follow his footsteps and see where they will lead me to.
It was a great experience listening to a professional like Mr. Levine. And through him, I believe I can achieve my dreams of being an entrepreneur, owning my own company. I am more confident of myself and what lies ahead of me in my career path. This assignment brought an important life experience that will sharpen my future.
