The National Association of Country and City Health Officials (NACCHO), an organization that is dedicated in helping local health departments, developed the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) CITATION NAC14 \l 1033 (NACCHO, 2014). The MAPP, therefore, represents a planning approach that is standard to local health department. The goal of the approach is to facilitate the advancement and progress of health, as well as the determination of quality of life achieved through mobilized partnerships and strategic movements (Speers 1992).
MAPP constitutes to multiple steps accomplished in six general phases beginning with the process called Organizing for Success and Partnership Development. Under this stage, the core planners gauge whether the implementation of MAPP is well-timed, fitting, and feasible. Thus, it was agreed to that to assume with a MAPP process, certain work groups are required to participate:
The core support team, the unit assigned to the preparation of materials needed to execute the process;
The sponsors and stakeholders, the unit who shares interest with the outcome of a decision which also serves as a guide while overseeing the direction of the process;
Finally, the community, the unit who is responsible for delivering the necessary input, representation, and decision making.
Then, propose at least two strategies for engaging and organizing community partners (stakeholders) and explain how you would apply these strategies.
Phase 4 of the MAPP refers to the process called Identifying Strategic Issues. This stage allows for the process of generating information based on the Four Assessments that comes prior to phase four. To relate these strategies, the following actions should be initiated:
Formulation of a prioritized list which bears the most important issues and challenges that confronts the health communities;
However, only the issues and challenges that endanger or threaten the goals and values of the community should be categorically classified as barriers to reaching our goal.
What would you anticipate as challenges? In other words, what would you foresee as barriers to opportunities in engaging and organizing communities? Explain why these challenges and barriers might exist. Be specific and provide example.
Two specific areas should be the focus of the Community Health Needs Assessment which is implemented by the Public Health sector. These include: (a) barriers to accessing healthcare, and (b) barriers to habits of a healthy lifestyle. The absence of motivation or ones willingness to change, and the absence of proper knowledge hinder the accomplishment of the public health goals.
Access to healthcare includes:
Cost of healthcare. This is frequently identified as a barrier to taking advantage of quality healthcare.
Obstacles relating to access to healthcare, prescription, insurance, and medical attention which does not cover cost.
Additional barriers may refer to excess paperwork, the physical or geographic location of healthcare services, absence means to travel or transportation, fear or distrust of the healthcare system, and misinformation.
Most common hurdles that were identified relates to the growing scarcity of healthcare providers (primary care and specialists), the need for convenient hours, and absence of insurance.
Adopting or leading healthy lifestyles includes:
The cost of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, insufficient time, unfamiliarity to the lists of available services, limited access to nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables, limited access to recreational facilities, and compromised mechanisms to safety.
The absence of motivation or willingness to initiate the necessary change, and the lack of knowledge.
