Implementation of IOM
The historical nursing timeline states that in the past decades, the health care standards and practice have altered the national approach on the issues towards the provision of high-quality and affordable care (Institute of Medicine and Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011). Moreover, the current plan has established norms on exercising patient-centered, coordinated and society-based care services for the aging and diverse community. With the increase in demand for nursing services, the health care professional workforce has to lead, and partner with other healthcare gives to promote quality care. Moreover, in 2010 the IOM established and implemented The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health that assisted in the provision of policy recommendations to help upgrade the healthcare sector (Institute of Medicine and Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011). Moreover, the RWJF 'Robert Wood Johnson Foundation' contributed to the launching of the campaign to implement the recommendations. Therefore, the paper analyzes The Future of Nursing report through assessing the progress of the proposals, role of the RWJF, importance of the IOM, and intent of the campaign.
Executive Summary on the Role of the RWJF
Indeed, the nursing profession is growing at a very rapid rate. With its growth, nursing tends to face challenges that are affecting its performance both academically and practically (Bleich, 2011). To handle these barriers, nursing as an independent institution needs the collaboration of both public and private entities, for example, government and non-governmental organization. One of the pioneer programs that have proven to be of great use towards driving the academic and professional scopes of nursing towards success is the partnership between the (RWJF) Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Medicine (Bleich, 2011).
The partnership initiative that was launched in 2008, enhanced in the provision of recommendations that would benefit the discipline in the future (Bleich, 2011). Moreover, the initial setups that required nursing improvements are health care centers, learning institutions, homes, retail healthcare facilities, battlefields, communities, as well as public health care environments (Institute of Medicine and Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011). To promoted quality nursing practices in the mentioned facilities, the profession requires establishing a standardized approach of training nurses and employing licensed and qualified personnel.
Also, with the formation of an appointed IOM committee in collaboration with the influence of the RWJF initiatives, more recommendation has been imposed as a means of improving the nursing profession (Bleich, 2011). The first initiative enhances much on nursing education and training; thus, the creation of advanced practice registered nurses who can handle various tasks within the scope of the profession (Institute of Medicine and Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011). Additionally, the nursing profession requires an improved education system to enhance academic progression. Moreover, nursing needs to be an essential profession that needs to acquire a full partnership with other medical businesses in the United States (Bleich, 2011).
Lastly, nursing needs to understand the role of workforce schedule and planning by incorporating research and ICT. Unfortunately, such success cannot be achieved if nursing remains an independent entity. To ensure success, the nursing profession needs to improve on the authority of the current policies, business, and enterprise operations by providing it gets all the assistance from the government, private healthcare, professional associations, and the community's support to enhance quality care (Huston, 2013).
Importance of IOM
Future nursing initiatives are among the long-term plans for improving nursing practice. First, the Institute of Medicine enhances more on extensive education and training. The IOM initiative enhances the integration of all types of nurses in a working environment, for example, it service of both registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses (Huston, 2013). By implementing such an approach of employing both RNs and APRNs, there are better chances that the clinical academic and practical approach will involve clinicians with different qualifications; thus, supporting the elements of teamwork, acute and quality health care, and exceptional leadership of the practice (Bleich, 2011).
Moreover, IOM will ensure that all the practitioners get qualified academic and training practice since the professionals will have the opportunity to share knowledge as well as provide acute initiatives for implementing the best method (Huston, 2013). Also, programs offered by the IOM will ensure high turnover rates among the new nursing-students since the academic practice will aim in ensuring proper transition-to-practice, school-to-practice, and quality care.
Next, with initiatives such as the IOM, the nursing personnel will have an added advantage of implementing the effective working approach. Also, the best approach will enhance the implementation of advantageous policies (Institute of Medicine and Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011). These policies are not just created to ensure better performance among the nursing personnel, but ensure that the nursing students are exposed to a wide range of educational changes, developments in the nursing workforce, and also initiate acute planning projections that embrace the use of skill mix, demographic nursing, and practice (Huston, 2013).
Additionally, IOM is an advanced education program. Its initiatives enhance higher levels of academic training through the provision of educational progression. The system ensures an added advantage towards the nursing profession in various ways (Huston, 2013). First, higher educated nurses have the ability and experience to promote safe healthcare delivery. Additionally, IOM ensures that nursing students get the opportunity to learn and master patient-centered health care across different medical setups (Bleich, 2011). Back to back, currently, research indicates that the rise of complicated healthcare situations has risen rapidly.
With the accountability of IOM programs, nurses will be equipped with better knowledge, resources, and competency in delivering high-quality care. Furthermore, such IOM programs enhance skills in sectors such as leadership, health standards, system enhancement, and evidence-based practice. With the availability of these skills, nurses stand higher chances of solving Dilemma-related issues. Next, it also promoted the norms of nursing since the practitioners get the opportunity to advance their academic qualifications; thus, make them earn licensed practice programs (Bleich, 2011).
Action Coalitions
Action Coalitions are arranged advances comprised of diverse teams/stakeholders that drive a campaign toward effective, sustainable change at all government levels. Moreover, such practices enhance on the implementation of best nursing practice that involves the integration of research, advanced education platforms, and ideal models of training nurses as a means of accelerating improvements at all government levels (Institute of Medicine and Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011). The approach initiated by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation was undertaken to identify the regional scope groups that have in the past implemented action coalitions that involve Future Nursing: Campaign Action (Bleich, 2011).
Also, action coalitions are responsible for various obligations, for example, identifying IOM goals, establishing and mobilizing primary stakeholders that represent each nursing sector, educate on the policies and participate in decision making, and work in improving the IOM report proposals (Bleich, 2011). Some of the initiatives performed by the coalition action entails, enhancing opportunities for nurses to manage, lead, and decide on any collaborative efforts a campaign needs (Huston, 2013). Next, increase the scopes of proportionality of practitioners who attained a bachelor's degree.
Conclusion
To conclude, the issues affecting the nursing industry has led to the formation of the public and private partnership to increase the quality of services provided by profession. Institutions such as RWJF have assisted by proposing policies that were of great help towards the transformation of the business since it promoted advanced learning opportunities, nurses' partnership with other healthcare caregivers, as well as promoting nursing leadership. Finally, action coalition has assisted in the mobilizing of various nursing profession stakeholders who in turn help with the creation of recommended policies used by IOM programs.
