Introduction
The Institute of Medicine report (IOM), The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, involves the evaluation of the nursing workforce. It provides recommendations that focus on the diverse health needs of people, the varying patients across the life expectancy, and the activities of those in medical practice. The recommendations are targeted towards supporting efforts to improve the wellbeing of the Americans. They target the contribution of health care providers in delivering care. This paper focuses on reviewing the IOM report and exploring the "Campaign for State Action Coalition."Work of the Committee Initiative That Led to the Report
In 2008, a partnership between the Foundation Committee named after Robert Wood and the Institute of Medicine inaugurated a corporation program to evaluate and recommend the need to transform the nursing practice. They conducted a study to scrutinize the aptitude of the nurses to satisfy the anxieties of the health system. It was discovered that the nurses had the potential and innovative strategies to mitigate severe health issues (Altman et al., 2016). They after that came up with suggestions on the implementation of change in the health care sector through the nurses. They included ways to improve the health care system in America.
Key Messages That Structure the IOM Report Recommendations
The first message is that nurses should exercise their full level of knowledge and training. It has changed the health care sector as the federal government continues to promote effective reforms by ensuring the best practice (IOM, 2011). For example, the Federal Trade commission targets anti-competitiveness in the health care sector. The Federal Employees Health Benefits program also ensures that employees access a wide range of competent health care.
The Report also commends that the nurses should be offered with opportunities for nurses to take leadership positions and that the nurses should partner with other medical practitioners in redesigning health care. It has transformed health care as currently, nurses are required to have collaborative competencies across all settings (IOM, 2011). For example, nurses collaborate in providing care. Additionally, nurses have to achieve a high level of education and training via an improved training scheme. It will ensure that nurses provide outstanding and needs centred care in all settings. It has transformed health care as those in nursing practice are required to go through multiple educational pathways after and before attaining a license. For example, there is a Versant organization that oversees and assesses nursing transformation to run programs for kids and overall acute facilities.
Moreover, the Report recommends the need for improved information on health care practitioners. Data collection and advanced information setup are useful for workforce planning (IOM, 2011). It has transformed health care as currently; data collection and analysis has become essential in practice due to innovations such as bundled payments and health information technology.
Role of State-Based Action Coalitions
The action coalitions include nurses and other partners in the community, such as businesses, consumers, and education representatives. Their primary function is to ensure change locally by working to transform health care through nursing practice and building healthy communities (Hancock, 2017). They work towards forming a diverse nursing workforce and encouraging nursing education to ensure competency. They provide that there is the removal of barriers to the scope of practice. They also work towards ensuring the collection of data and leadership skills to fulfil the needs of the health care needs in the state.
Initiatives Which Mary Land State Action Coalition Is Working On
Mary Land State Action Coalition has developed pathways to ensure education progression. It has emphasized an Associate Degree in Nursing to Bachelor of Science. It has also ensured nursing articulation models in the whole state. There are numerous grants from various foundations to ensure a qualified nursing faculty. The stakeholders develop a well-educated workforce by providing employers to advertise preference for nurses who have completed a baccalaureate degree (Hancock, 2017). They work with Mary Land nurses to improve the culture of health by improving health care outcomes and reduce costs.
Moreover, the coalition has nominated the nurse leaders for appointments to the state commissions and working groups. Two members from the University of Mary Land School of Nursing have been nominated for the health care commission in Mary Land (Hancock, 2017). Margaret Hammersla has been appointed to the Mary Land Health Care Commission. It has ensured that they modernize the health sector.
Ways, the Initiatives, Advance the Nursing Profession
The initiatives advance the nursing profession as they ensure that nurses gain enough knowledge to satisfy the complex health requirements of the residents. They provide nurses with faculties, where they can develop their education (Spetz, 2018). It also ensures that nurses progress in their studies to help them attain competency in the field. It has ensured that the nurses advance by offering them leadership opportunities.
Barriers to Advancement That Currently Exist in the State
There is a shortage of nurses in the state. Therefore, the available nurses cannot fully satisfy the health care requirements of the changing demographic needs. More people are also suffering from chronic illnesses (Spetz, 2018). There is also an increase in drug costs, which hampers the efforts to make the healthcare system affordable and accessible for all.
The coalition overcomes the barriers by offering affordable education programs to develop more nurses. It also ensures that nurses advance their education. The coalition has also ensured that those with chronic diseases receive affordable care (Spetz, 2018). A committee has also been formed to evaluate the reasons for the rise in drug costs.
