Introduction

Social work can be defined as planned work directed to the betterment of the social conditions by improving the requirements of the poor while still promoting the wellbeing of the children. On the other hand, recidivism refers to doing an illegal or bad thing once more after being punished or after having stopped a particular behavior. An excellent example of recidivism is when a thief who has been freed from the jail steals something else within the first sunlight hours. Increase in recidivism can be associated with providing fewer services, allowing violence during incarceration and imprisoning the offenders away from their homes. Previous studies generally focused on the impact of social work on recidivism, but there is also a need to study the role of social work on recidivism. This research, therefore, seeks to address the question of whether there is a significant role played by the social work on recidivism. The study shall employ the descriptive research design to analyze the part of social work on recidivism. Data shall be analyzed through open coding and clustering. The study aims to address the role of social work on recidivism since a majority of the offenders who comes from the jail still end up committing offenses.

Social Work and Recidivism

Cases of recidivism among the offenders have been highly pronounced irrespective of the social work entities are playing a pivotal role, especially in the United States. The previously conducted study revealed that the greatest failure in the recidivism took place in an event where social work employed proactive intervention method opposed to supporting oriented way. A majority of the persons who become incarnated will be eventually brought back to the community one day. Individuals who are freed from the jail have varying levels of preparation. Previous research has pushed for rehabilitation programs and plans on how to renter the successful offender back in the society. Statistics have proven that offenders are recidivating at very extreme rates. The ex-offenders have a pessimistic nuance and stigma on them. Despite the needs for services and proper programming of the social work, there is a lack of knowledge and resources on how to handle recidivism. The role of social work in dealing with recidivism needs to be addressed since it seems that its purpose is not clear. Studies done previously only focused on the impact but there were no attempts made to explain the role of social work in dealing with recidivism. This research aims at creating the awareness of the public, in general, the part of the social work in dealing with recidivism. A majority who engage in the justice system as teen k ends up having a poor relationship in the community. Understanding the fact that the persons who were incarcerated have never been engaged in encouraging life skills, it, therefore, gives stronger support on the need of social work upon the release through services and programs available. Social workers, therefore, should aim at targeting recidivism and better modalities to raise society reentry for the ex-offenders. Studies have pointed out that prisons are not in the upper hand of transforming a majority of the offenders into proper working members in the community. Society and experts are in the process of recognizing the failed attempts in rehabilitating the criminals back to the community.

An in-depth assessment of the prose will bring an understanding of the role of social work on recidivism among the ex-offenders. The goal in exploring the part of social work is critical in dropping recidivism and ensuring one's success in the community entry. This research paper will add more knowledge by adding relevant information about the role of social work employees in reducing recidivism. Lack of information and knowledge is a significant issue in recidivism. To minimize the cases of recidivism, an individual in the environmental loom should be incorporated to meet the needs of an individual despite the existence of barriers

A study by Paulson, (2013) was done based on evaluating the role of the community-based programs in reducing recidivism. The study employed a descriptive research design. This design was the most appropriate in the research. The study was qualitative, and interviews were used to gather data. This design is the most appropriate in cases where interviews are used as data collection tools. This study strived at getting an understanding of society based programs and their inmate roles in reducing recidivism. The data collected was used to recognize the theme in the participant's interview. Data were analyzed by use of explanation of meetings, coding, and grouping. The study found that the society had slowly started revisiting their stand on the offenders. Five themes came out from data scrutiny; social disgrace, insufficient basic needs, impacts of poverty, unrealistic preparedness and community ties. It was concluded that social workers should be advocates who work for a change.

Secondly, a study by Chaimwotz, (2011) on attitudes, criminal associates and recidivism revealed that the society based services are important to gauge among the imprisoned populations. The study found that social work can play a critical role in reintegration if its role in society is well known. This study employed correlation research design to investigate whether there is a relationship between recidivism and criminal associates and attitude. This design is most appropriate in cases where the relationship between two disciplines needs to be determined. Findings also indicated that the criminal associates predicted position and recidivism although altitude failed to forecast associates and recidivism.

Lastly, Listwan (2013) did a study on the impact of strain on inmate recidivism. The research suggests that imprisonment may boost levels of offending but the case behind it is not clear. The study examined exposure to stresses related to jail about recidivism. Examples of such strains include victimization, the perception of a threatening environment of prison and harsh affiliation with correctional officers. This study used qualitative design which is most appropriate in describing the impact.

Conclusion

The goal of this research paper was to gain a good understanding of the roles of social work on recidivism. Important insight concerning the function of social work on reducing recidivism among the ex-offenders has been obtained. This research paper aimed at gaining a greater understanding of the role of the social worker in a community to solve the social problems and ensure the success of ex-offenders in the city. Social workers, in general, have a unique view of an individual and addressing the difficulty of recidivism.
