In essence, comparing National statistics with Saddleback Memorial Medical Centre, national statistics show that there has been a 46 percent decrease in CLABSIs across the United States from 2008 to 2013. However, an estimate of 30,100 CLABSIs still occurs as explained by CDC while in Saddleback Memorial Medical Centre, there have been only 2 infections in the ICU/wards in 3,767 days that patients had central lines in the period 2016 and 2017. Apparently, this was 38 percent better than the national rates as explained by one of the nursing managers in various hospital. In essence, from the data provided by the hospital staff, blood infections generally are rated at 0.565 and at the ICU is 0.243 which is no different from the national rate but the best rating would be when the difference is rated as zero (HEALTHCARE-ASSOCIATED INFECTIONS (HAI) PROGRAM., 2017). The rate can be explained by the data provided on a scale of zero percent to hundred percent depending on how well the hospital is handled (Checklist for Prevention of Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections., 2011). This data was collected from a sample size of 2054 patients in the period of 2014 to 2015
Patients always receive help ASAP 60%
Patients usually receive help as soon as they want 27%
Patients sometimes or never receive help ASAP 13%
TOTAL 100%
Rooms are always clean 73%
Room is usually clean 20%
Rooms are sometimes or never clean 7%
TOTAL 100%
Nurses always communicate well 75%
Nurses usually communicate well 20%
Nurses sometimes or never communicate well 5%
TOTAL 100%
From the data above, we can see that the organization was not 100 percent at handling patients as required. Apparently, these can explain the reason as to why there have been the above-named bloodstream infections. The rooms should, therefore, be 100 percent clean regardless of the situation concerning the condition of the patients (Shah, Bosch, Thompson, & Hellinger, 2013). Additionally, communication should be effective to ensure no damage is done to the patients and that they are comfortable with how they are handled (Compare Hospital Complications: SADDLEBACK MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER VS. HOAG MEMORIAL HOSPITAL PRESBYTERIAN., 2018). Essentially, help should, therefore, be effective the moment they realize a patient needs the doctors or the nurses for help
Recommendations
In essence, the infection can occur before inserting the central line or when removing the central line. Therefore, patients should team up with the doctors and nurses to communicate effectively in terms of the vein to insert the central line and wash hands appropriately before handling the central line (Haddadin & Regunath, 2017). Additionally, patients should ensure the central line is 100% clean, therefore, ask the providers to clean your skin with a sterilizer
The hospital should ensure it has informed its nurses and doctors on the hospitals policies. That the patients at the hospitals assets (Bloodstream Infection Event, 2018). Additionally, it should be noted that they should be handled with care no matter how annoying or rude the patient is.
The dressing of patients should be done using clean gloves and sterilized equipment. Gauze dressing should be changed at least after every two days. Patients above 18 years old should be dressed using a chlorhexidine-soaked dresser that is labeled FDA to reduce CLABSI as well as prevention instructions.
