Introduction
Dominic Passantino died at the age of 19 in a fire that occurred in his college dormitory. Fellow students who share an admiration for him describe scented candles left overnight as the cause of the fire. The incident is one of many fire accidents that occur in many institutions around the country. They can be prevented by educating people on fire safety and adhering to the fire safety codes and standards for buildings. The unfortunate reality is that fire safety is not taken seriously in terms of education and preparedness. People do not have knowledge on how to avoid fire accidents, and also how to handle a situation where there is fire. Concurrently, many of the institution buildings do not abide by the fire code and safety standards. Fire safety needs serious attention where both fire safety education and fire code standards need to be addressed.
The first step in fire safety should be to educate the people concerned on how to avoid starting fires by accident. Students and the school staff can attend mandatory classes on fire safety. At the end of the classes, they can be encouraged to become fire safety ambassadors. An incident that can be pointed out from the video is one where one of the students describes how he left candles on overnight. It was an innocent act, but with fatal consequences. The students should be taught against leaving lit candles unattended. The staff, on the other hand, can also be guided on how to encourage the sensitization of fire safety in their respective institutions. It is assumed that the students know how to take care of themselves, and some things such as fire safety are common knowledge. However, some of the students go to college where for the first time they have to live alone. It is imperative to equip them with knowledge of fire safety prevention, which might end up saving their lives.
One also needs to learn how to react in the case of the fire. Skills such as how not to panic and how to raise an alarm are vital in these situations of fire. One can also learn how to contain fires started from different sources such as oil or electricity. It is sad to learn from the video that there was an attempt to try and stop the fire using cups of water. The severity of fire is clearly absent. Students with knowledge of fire safety would have at least saved their fellow student Dominic if they failed to curb the fire.
Conclusion
Fire code safety standards are not followed in many buildings, especially those in institutions that hold many children. A single dormitory holds an average of four students per room. In the room, there are clothes and books that pose as fire hazards. In the case of a fire, the items would increase the combustion rate. As such, there needs to be emergency procedures and equipment at hand when needed. Attention needs to be focused on ensuring buildings have a fire escape, fire extinguishers, and if possible, ceiling water sprinklers. Parents need to be concerned about the places that they send their children to reside. They need to ensure that the places have a fire drill and the necessary equipment in the case of a fire. Many of the fire incidences where there is a loss of life can be avoided with the right education and by institutions adhering to the fire safety code in buildings.
