Introduction
The topic selected for the capstone project was the prevention and control of ventilator infections such as ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). In any change project, establishing intents is crucial because it guides the success of a project. The purpose of this paper is to identify three objectives for the capstone change project.
Objectives
The implementation of the project will help to increase awareness of the use of oral chlorhexidine medication, as evidenced by nurses managing to prevent the event of VAP.
Nurses will have medication education and understand the use of chlorhexidine to reduce VAP rates. Gillam et al. (2016) affirmed that medication information helps to improve patient experience and care. The proposed project and objectives advocate for autonomy and social justice for people and diverse populations because their access to quality care will be increased.
The implementation of the project will help nurses monitor and track patients for early indications of infections such as VAP, as evidenced by reduced infection.
Nursing staff will be trained on the ways to monitor mechanically ventilated patients for early infections of VAP. Saunders et al. (2016) stated that an education intervention would help nurses adopt evidence-based solutions in their practice. The proposed project and objectives advocate for autonomy and social justice for people and diverse populations because when nurses detect infections early, the insurance coverage for patients with decrease. Also, through education, nurses will increase their cultural competence and provide equitable care to patients.
The implementation of the project will provide nurses with a specific criterion for applying oral chlorhexidine, as evidenced by decreased cases of VAP.
Nursing staff will manage to know when to remove the patients’ ventilation to avoid infections such as VAP. Gardner et al. (2016) affirmed that developing a nursing journal club would help nurses understand the use of best evidence to apply in their practice. The proposed project and objectives advocate for autonomy and social justice for people and diverse populations as nurses will manage to engage the patients and their families in health decisions, and also provide quality evidence-based care across diverse populations.
Conclusion
Cultural competence is necessary among nurses. Regarding the objectives mentioned above, the proposed project advocates for autonomy and social justice for people and diverse populations. Through evidence-based research, nurses will manage to provide quality care.
