The public school system aims at ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to pursue their professional ambitions despite their gender, social status, religion or race. However, some critics claim that most educational systems are designed in a particular manner that promotes the boys' academic success compared to their female colleagues. The critics blame the education stakeholders for failure to integrate an inclusive approach that focuses on promoting equal academic success among the boys and girls. However, the incorporation of modern public education policies has contributed to an increase in the population of female students pursuing STEM courses in tertiary institutions. Therefore, the public school system has played a central role in reducing gender inequality in the education sector, providing role models, and encouraging girls to pursue STEM careers.
Firstly, the adoption of affirmative policies in public schools system has created opportunities to promote academic success and address gender inequality in the education sector. Besides, the public school system plays a fundamental role in abating gender stereotypes that influence students' mentality. For example, most of the K-12 policies focus on eliminating the gender gaps within the American educational system (Posey-Maddox et al. 449). Such policies have played an integral role in demystifying perceptions that undermine the girls' choices, by encouraging them to pursue their academic ambitions. For that reason, the public school system has incorporated affirmative actions that counter the gendered stereotypes on girls to empower them to succeed academically.
Secondly, most public school systems have paid more attention to the girls' educational needs promoting their academic success. For example, in most marginalized societies there are several public schools established to enroll girls only. The agencies and stakeholders in the education sector have adopted such strategies to ensure that the community prioritizes educating girls rather than assigning them domestic chores (Boutte 525). Additionally, in such public schools, the teachers have increased their interaction with the girls to nurture their aspirations on becoming great personalities who will help in solving societal issues. Hence, such public school system inspires the girls to succeed academically, and serve as role models to their colleagues at that elementary and high school levels.
Thirdly, research indicates that the number of female students who enrolled in the STEM disciplines was considerably low in the past decades. However, nowadays the population of the female students pursuing STEM courses in most tertiary institutions has increased gradually. The increase can be attributed to the public school tutors that have nurtured the girls' intellectual abilities at the elementary and high school levels. For instance, a study on 10,000 American school districts depicted wide variations on the boys' and girls' performance in grade three to eight. The researchers established that in public schools with students from diverse ethnic backgrounds the girls' performance in Math and Science surpassed their male colleagues (Nordlander, and Stensota 868). Therefore, the public school tutors have a major obligation in ensuring that girls are aggressive in pursuing their STEM careers from the elementary and high school stages.
Conversely, the public school system has played a fundamental role in boosting the boys' graduation rates. The impact of the public school system is evident among the African American and Hispanic communities. The public schools in such neighborhoods have advocated form the young men to be enrolled in school rather than indulging in illegal activities in the streets. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, most of the men of color were involved in illicit gang activities that led to most of the African American and Hispanic boys' incarceration during their teenage phase (Posey-Maddox et al. 452). Nevertheless, in the past decade, the public education system has played a vital role in lowering the imprisonment rate and increasing their graduation rates.
One of the primary objectives of the public school system is empowering an individual physiologically, mentally, and emotionally. Subsequently, the public education system has produced several male role models who inspire their peers to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. For example, in the marginalized communities, approximately 33% of the male students are high school dropouts (Nordlander, and Stensota 873). However, the provision of a relatively cheap public school system strives at improving the academic success of boys from marginal societies. As a result, the public school systems have integrated mentorship programs to assist in enhancing the boys' academic success rate, especially in marginalized communities.
The public school system has increased the boys' academic success rate in most marginalized communities. Consequently, reducing the boys' indulgence in crime, and lowering their incarceration rates particularly among the African American and Hispanic societies. Equally, education has led to a significant decrease in the number of young girls involved in crime and prostitution (Boutte 538). Therefore, the public education system has promoted the girls' intellectual awareness to be self-reliant and succeed in their academic endeavors.
The high graduation rates among the Hispanic and African American boys have led to an increase in their enrollment in public schools located in their vicinity. Furthermore, the public school's mentorship programs have kept the boys off the street through their positive role model initiatives. Similarly, the public school system has nurture female role models who have demystified the notion that the STEM courses are male-dominated disciplines (Nordlander, and Stensota 877). The role models have inspired girls in the elementary and high schools not to underestimate their potential, despite the gender stereotypes on women pursuing STEM careers.
