Introduction

My interest in health care practice began when I was in high school. During this time, I had a medical condition that made me spend almost a third of my time in the hospital. The experience and time in the hospital were ones that no individual would wish to have if given an option to choose, but for me, I had no choice. This got me thinking of the kind of environment that would be favorable, efficient and one that supports quick recovery of a patient. My urge to work in the medical field grew. After realizing that working as a medical practitioner would help in changing the environment to achieve quick recovery for patients requiring proper medical care and treatment.

I undertook my undergraduate program in 2012 at the University of Victoria to study Health Information and Science program. The program has introduced me to the basic fundamental of information systems, organizational behavior and the various political structures that exist in the healthcare industry. My major interest was vested in subjects concerning healthcare delivery and modes to improve them including the organizational and strategic planning all of which I attained distinctions. Apart from school work, I engaged as a social support volunteer at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. I spent six hours every week interacting with patients and healthcare providers who shared their work stories. I was able to acquire a lot after acquiring first-hand information from those who were already working in the field. The experience was one that helped to conclude that at the core of health care provision is the people. The health authority is the critical factor whether in the environment or the standards of health care provided.

I have had a vast work experience that has enabled me to strengthen my skills in the various disciplines and also given me various perspectives of the healthcare industry. The first placement I had a role as a business analyst to support system implementation for Primary Access Regional Information System (PARIS), that was a community-based health care system used for residential care, mental health services, and home-based health services. During my other placements, I have had a chance to work with several health authorities in Vancouver. I have also participated in several regional extensive clinical and operational systems that were an implementation project. Having a chance to speak to the medical care providers on a daily basis also contributed a lot to having knowledge on their requirements of their operational needs including the challenges that they go through in delivering the services as required. I was also able to learn a valuable lesson on the gaps between the expectations and the strategic changes. Therefore, I realized that making a change in the health care provider environment is not as easy as I thought it was, on the contrary, it is a complex and challenging task.

The guiding mission behind me undertaking the Master of Health Administration (MHA) program at the University of Washington is to help me to fulfill my ambition to contribute to the health care industry. I believe that being an early-career professional in the health care industry and having a diverse experience has prepared me enough to acquire the MHA program. This is based on my passion of becoming a health care leader with the main goal of building a favorable and strong medical team to provide an efficient health care system that will serve the community effectively.

Conclusion

I believe that the MHA program of the University of Washington will help me to extend my expertise, experience, knowledge, skills, and commitment to motivating the health care conditions to a higher level. My career goal is to keep and strengthen my expertise in healthcare and to gain more insights into the leadership and management role in the health care system. I am looking forward to being given a chance to be in the program and have a new chance to fulfill my goals.
