What gives my life meaning and what gives me purpose in life?
Being a born again Christian makes life have meaning for me. Knowing that Jesus Christ died for my sins so that I may live is enough meaning in life. Other than that, I also find purpose in life from my family, friends and the relations that I forge every day. In simple terms, people make life worth living. It is no wonder that I am in the nursing profession.
What or who brings me a sense of joy?
Christ in my heart gives me joy. Knowing that I will go to heaven makes me happy. I also find joy in helping my fellow man in whatever way I can. Particularly, as a nurse and a source of relief from pain is something that brings much joy to my heart.
What do I hope for?
I hope to go to heaven when the last day comes. I hope to be ready for Christ. Before then, I hope to be a source of joy to every person that I interact with and make life worth living in whatever way I can. My career in life is also based on giving relief, hope, and joy to others in the nursing sector which is something I do with my whole heart.
What or who gives me strength?
My strength comes from God, creator of all things. He is all-powerful and the provider of all strength. I believe that God is the source of life and the source of all strength for everyone. I also find strength in my family and friends who encourage me every day to look forward to a better future not just for me but also for the generations that are to come. Also, as a nurse, I find strength from patients who fight adversity and find healing.
Who do I love and who loves me?
As a Christian, I am taught to love as a compulsory thing. The bible teaches us to love all people as we love ourselves. It, therefore, means that I love everyone which is being a true follower of Christ. My family and friends love me, or so they say but of importance is that Jesus loves me.
Nursing and Matters of Spirituality
How would I define religion and spirituality
I believe that religion is the doorway towards spirituality. Every religion believes in a spiritual being who they all pay allegiance to. As such, religion helps and guides a physical person connect with his spiritual being. Christianity particularly is a religion that helps one connect with God who created him/her and life according to the way the creator envisions for us. Spirituality is having a sense of connection with things larger than ourselves. Religion helps make the connection.
What is my role, if any, in providing spiritual care to my patients as a nurse?
As a nurse, I believe that we are all connected to the creator. It is also alright that we go through adversities because they make us stronger to live in this world. As a nurse, I bring hope to my patients by offering them encouraging words and telling them that God is in control of all things. Most of all, prayer is the biggest tool that I use as a way of providing spiritual care to my patients.
How would I respond if asked to pray with a patient? What if that patient has a different faith background?
It is important always to respect other people irrespective of having different perspectives from our own. If requested to pray with a patient, I will first ask for the patient's consent. If he/she accepts, we will pray together and ask God to touch his/her life and bring healing. If prayer is of a different faith, I will still offer prayers if asked but only after permission from the patient. A prayer is a tool that goes beyond barriers of religion or faith, and I will still pray with the patient if he/she is willing.
How would I respond if asked to collaborate with a spiritual leader whose faith and beliefs are contradictory to my own?
I will accept although to a particular extent. It is important to respect each and every person and the faith and religion they hold dear. The extent to which I will accept is where the spiritual leader's faith and beliefs affect my personal and spiritual life negatively.
