There are several goals which I hope to achieve upon completing my Graduate Program and becoming an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse practitioner. Foremost, I hope to widen my scope of comprehension and practice in order to play a bigger role in managing and determining care for my clients. I enjoy the concept of incremental responsibility associated with these fields of nursing practice. Therefore, I hope to be part of the professional team that will further gerontology services in the community through education and support. Thirdly, through either of these programs, I hope to develop the right professional preparation to be able to provide my clients with better-individualized attention, consistent encouragement and to develop more in-depth plans to accomplish professional tasks. More importantly, I hope to be more knowledgeable, be a resource to other nurses and be a community educator within my current professional field.
I strive to be all-round with regards to knowledge and experience in my professional field. This aspect is reflected in my professional and academic background. I have extensive experience working with gerontological populations. My very first professional duty was as a social worker back in Belarus. In this capacity, I did many home visits. My responsibilities involved assessing the living conditions of older people, their needs and health. I prepared and did constant modifications of their care plans according to changes in their conditions.
The formative years of my academic and professional path prepared me for the rigor and awareness needed for practice. About five years before joining the nursing school, I volunteered as a laboratory assistant at a small community hospital, where most patients were nursing home residents. My experience in this environment prepared me to communicate effectively. This is because the assignments involved listening keenly and being patient. When I enrolled in nursing school, I was already prepared to work with older populations in my practice. I recognized that this integral population segment is becoming a more significant part of our community and that they need more care and attention. To offer the best level of attention for them requires the right knowledge and experience which I believe are inherent in these programs.
My professional exposures have endowed me with a strong experience foundation and the thirst to acquire even more knowledge and experience in this field. Presently, I find the challenges offered in my daily duties at a busy Downtown Los Angeles hospital to be manageable. My academic and professional preparedness enable me to attend to more geriatric patients. While I have the feeling that I am conversant about how to provide the best care for them, I also believe that I can perform at a higher level. I firmly believe that a Masters program in your prestigious institution will prepare me for this much-needed skills and experience appraisal.
Personal Information
I derive most of my professional inspiration from my day-to-day experiences. I also believe that relatable situations and challenges provide the most important experience and professionalism. Presently, I live I live with my 82-year-old mother and 84-year-old mother-in-law. I find my greatest physical and psychological support and inspiration from these two lovely ladies, my husband, and son. My mother-in-law first fronted the decision to pursue a Master degree in the field of gerontology. When she said, 'We trust you, you are professional, and with more knowledge, you can provide more help to people like us,' I realized that I could do more and that I should not limit my potential.
Besides my immediate family setting, I have worked with older people at a personal level for more than ten years, first as a social worker, then as a medical and laboratory assistant, and presently as a registered nurse. My sociological knowledge prepares me to perceive the population of my interest uniquely from the other age groups. Based on my social work background, I learned the techniques to interact more effectively with older people and to assess the educational and general knowledge level. My experience in hospital nursing polished my assessment skills and gave me challenges to overcome which help me a lot when dealing with older people.
Education Plan
One of the essential qualities that I have developed throughout my academic and professional journey is time-keeping. This quality has been key for managing deadlines, being consistently professional, and finding a home-work balance. I intend to extensively apply this element as I begin the next level of my academic and career advancement. During the six years while taking prerequisites for my nursing program, and during the program, I managed to balance time between home and school and I hope to make this even better. Presently, I work two jobs. As I join my Masters degree program, I plan to drop one so that I find enough time to concentrate on my studies. I intend to use my academic knowledge and experience to improve my professionalism, personal growth, and to be part of a network of professionals that will find solutions to the challenges facing gerontological professional fields.
