Introduction
The article's key idea is to discuss patient falls in hospitals and their prevention with bed enclosures to improve patient safety in hospitals based on the nurses' perspective. The purpose of the study was to identify the effectiveness of the enclosure beds. The patient safety intervention entails restricted physical restraints of enclosures, which is considered an effective and efficient approach that limits the patients' falls. The research concludes that nurses reported an improvement in patient safety after the introduction of the enclosed beds as an approach to preventing patients' falls. Thus, the authors attain the objective of proving that physically restrained beds have a positive impact on preventing falls and consequently improve the patient's safety at the hospitals (Kim et al., 2018). The research shows how enclosure beds prevent patients from falling out, while the agitated patients require patient sitters rather than enclosures.
Progressive Care Unit
The study was conducted on a 37-bed progressive care unit whereby the nurses' responses were collected through both sensing rounds and a separate online survey (Kim et al., 2018). The enclosures beds had a minor drawback of affecting the care performance and accessing the patient. However, the minimization of patients' falls outweighed distracted care performance. Simultaneously, the caged and oppressive appearance can be countered through awareness of the essence of the enclosure beds to both the patients and the nurses. Being caged gave the patients a sense of protection as accidents fall or agitated falls were countered and made the patients feel safe and happy for they were not physically bound, and fear of falls was minimized. The conclusion suggests the need for promotion, advocacy, and education of patients’ safety benefits, cost-effectiveness, and patients’ freedom within the enclosed beds. It helps raise awareness on the acceptance and usage of enclosure beds since they are not highly adopted.
Conclusion
The article enlightened me on the need and benefits of enclosure beds for patients. I have learnt that enclosure beds have controls that help adjust the height of the bed, knee and head angles. Initially, I was hesitant about using the beds in the hospital as I believed they affected patients care, but with the controls, it is easy to access the patient. As a nurse, our main concern is patients safety and well-being; hence we should adopt the use of enclosure beds to prevent patients from falling.
