Some of the career options in marketing include product management and physical distribution, advertising and promotion, sales, retailing, non-profit marketing, global marketing, and marketing research. In product management and physical distribution, one can get a job as a product development manager, product or brand manager, supply chain manager, operations manager, inventory control manager, or a physical distribution specialist. In the sales category, the most common position is the salesperson position. However, even as a salesperson, one can opt to work in retail, trade, or as a professional salesperson. The advertisement category holds positions such as account executive, media buyer, copywriter, art director, sales promotion manager, public relations manager, digital marketing manager, and social media manager. It is plausible to become a buyer or a store manager in the retailing category.

Marketing plays a role in research as well, and positions held in this category entail marketing research analyst, competitive intelligence researcher, project manager, and marketing database manager. Working as a marketing manager in the non-profit marketing section, one can perform exemplary work like public relations and fund-raising. As the world becomes a global village, global marketing management position takes marketing up a notch since one can deal in world-trade.

Strengths and Weaknesses

All the positions in marketing that I have reviewed are all appealing, and as a student, I wish to venture into any of them. However, all these positions have requirements that I must meet. A marketer needs specific capabilities to fulfill their duties. One way to find out if I possess such skills is to assess my strengths and weaknesses. Evaluation of self-strength and deficiencies can be done in categories of interests, personality, education, abilities, desired job environment, experience, and personal goals. My personal goals include owning a real estate agency in the long term, but in the short run, I intend to complete my studies first. Career-wise, I hope to be the best in sales, and working as an intern in the sales department will enable me to realize these goals soon. In 5 years, I hoped to have completed my studies and landed my first job, and in 10 years, I intend my plans for a real estate agency to be underway. I want to get the best of both worlds at work, and in my personal life, I would prefer a job that gives me the perfect balance, i.e., both sides should be well matched.

As a junior student, I do not have much working experience except for volunteering at a hospital as a front desk assistant. Although it is not much, it has enabled me to master the art of speaking and to deal with all kinds of people, a trait that is much needed in sales jobs. In regards to my education, I have an acceptable GPA. I hope to graduate with honors, and a job appointment before or after is okay for me. In terms of my abilities, I find my computer skills at an average level. Communication skills I have mastered both verbal and written. If I were to get a job, my desired location would be California, so that I could use it as a training ground for the real estate business. I would be willing to relocate for convenience, and if it requires traveling, I would not mind. When it comes to my personality, I find myself competitive, well outspoken, leader by choice, and ambitious. I get along well with others, especially in teams, and can handle work pressure well. I am a cheerful person but a perfectionist.

My Choice

Evaluating my strengths and weaknesses, I realize that my interpersonal and leadership skills are excellent to the extent of me excelling in a sales career in the future. I believe as a salesperson, I would be able to enjoy myself as well as learn. In the future, as a salesperson, I think I would be ready for a good team member who adds value to the business. Apart from supporting my co-workers, I intend to make my customers happy. I do not wish to sell just for the sake of it. I want to help buyers seek joy in buying what I sell.

The Future

As human beings, we do not know what the future holds for us; however, we make plans for the future nonetheless. I am still a student, but career-wise I aspire to graduate with honors and land my first job with the next five years. It is not my ultimate goal to stay employed for the rest of my life; hence in ten years, I intend to learn and gather all the information, capital, and experience needed in running a real estate agency. Come twenty-five years in the future, I see myself running a successful real estate agency, and perhaps I could venture into designing, building, and construction and selling of property.

Conclusion

In conclusion, sales for me is not an interest that will diminish in the future; it is a life-time dream that I expect will bring joy to all the people I would meet. I aspire to improve the environment, making it a better place to live. Tending to people of different natures and backgrounds sounds thrilling. Being able to convince someone to buy and see them buy with a smile on their face is quite satisfying, and this is why sales is my choice.
